I Am Called by Your Name, O Lord

The way of life that God has provided.

The sayings of our mouth and the meditation of our heart.

Ps 19:14 – Let the sayings of my mouth, And the meditation of my heart, Be for a pleasing thing before Thee, O Jehovah, my rock, and my redeemer! (YLT)

What do the sayings of your mouth and the meditation of your heart reveal about who you think you are? Are they in agreement with the words of the Lord God and the meditation of his heart?

As you spend time resting in the word of God daily, forgetting everything you know except Jesus the Messiah, are you aware of a growing desire for your every word and thought to please the Lord? Are you becoming conscious of the Lord’s response to your every word and thought?

Read the words of Scripture slowly and reflectively. Let them settle deep in your soul and take root as you wait in anticipation for the Spirit of God to bring them to life in you.

Flourish in the courts of our God.

Ps 92:12-15 – The righteous flourish like the palm tree and grow like a cedar in Lebanon. They are planted in the house of the Lord; they flourish in the courts of our God. They still bear fruit in old age; they are ever full of sap and green, to declare that the Lord is upright; he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him. (ESV)

The righteous flourish.

Righteous: just, lawful; to be (make) right in a moral or legal sense; cleanse, be just, do justice; be, turn to righteousness.1

The righteous. Those cleansed and made right in a moral or legal sense, to be just and do justice. Planted in the house of the Lord. They flourish in the courts of our God.

Planted: transplant. To remove from one place and resettle in another.2

He has rescued us and transferred us.

Col 1:13 – He has rescued us from the domain of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son. (CJB)

Planted in the house of the Lord.
House: family, obtain children, make, repair, set up.3
Flourish in the courts of our God.
Flourish: break forth as a bud, to spread, to fly.4
Courts: a yard, as enclosed by a fence; also a hamlet as surrounded with walls; court, tower, village; thus separate from the open country.5

Righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ.

Phil 1:11 – filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. (ESV)

The righteous.
Filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ.
The righteous flourish in the courts of our God.

What words or thoughts have caught your attention in these texts? Why?

The way that God has provided.
Planted. Transplanted. Rescued. Transferred. Family. Break forth, spread.

The living and the dead.

1 Peter 4:5-6 – But they will have to give an account to him who stands ready to judge the living and the dead. This is why he was proclaimed to those who have died; it was so that, although physically they would receive the judgment common to all humanity, they might live by the Spirit in the way that God has provided. (CJB)

Shall give an account: to give away, give up, give over, give back; deliver again; repayment, requite, restore, sell, yield.6

The living and the dead
Physically receive the judgment common to all humanity.
Christ was proclaimed to those who have died,
That they might live by the Spirit,
In the way that God has provided.

You were dead but God made you alive.

Col 2:13-14 – You were dead because of your sins, that is, because of your “foreskin,” your old nature. But God made you alive along with the Messiah by forgiving you all your sins. He wiped away the bill of charges against us. Because of the regulations, it stood as a testimony against us; but he removed it by nailing it to the execution-stake. (CJB)

You were dead because of your old nature.
God made you alive along with the Messiah by forgiving you all your sins.
He wiped away the bill of charges against us.
He removed it by nailing it to the cross, the execution-stake.
That you might live by the Spirit,
In the way that God has provided.

Read the texts again. Chew upon the words. Turn them over and over in your mind. Ask the Lord God what he wants you to receive from them and how he wants you to respond to them.

They will have to give an account to him who stands ready to judge the living and the dead.

The word which I have spoken will judge.

John 12:48-50 – Those who reject me and don’t accept what I say have a judge — the word which I have spoken will judge them on the Last Day. For I have not spoken on my own initiative, but the Father who sent me has given me a command, namely, what to say and how to say it. And I know that his command is eternal life. So what I say is simply what the Father has told me to say.” (CJB)

How awesome it would be to be so united with Christ and our Father that we would always say what the Father wants us to say and how he wants us to say it!

Judge: to separate, select, choose, to determine, to pronounce judgment, to administer affairs, to govern, to make a resolve.7

Ready to judge. Ready to separate between the dead and the living. Ready to administer affairs. Ready to select life.

The word which I have spoken will judge, the word given by the Father, will separate, select, choose, determine, pronounce judgment, administer affairs, govern, make a resolve, between the dead and the living, that we might live by the Spirit in the way that God has provided.

Do we know the word, the command of the Father, as Jesus knows it?

Do we hear our Father’s words from the mouth of Christ Jesus in the same way that our Father intended for us to hear them and receive them? Do we hear condemnation in Jesus’ words? Do we hear a standard of measurement that we must meet? Or do we hear life in Jesus’ words? Do we hear threat or promise? Do we feel dread or hope and trust in the Father’s words as Jesus spoke them and continues to speak them to each of us today?

“And I know that his command is eternal life.”

Surely it is impossible for Jesus the Messiah to fail to obey God’s command on your behalf, or mine, or anyone’s! “And I know that his command is eternal life.”

Are we relying on our own logic, experience, and perceptions to interpret God’s word or do we rely on divine revelation that is made known in a manner and at a time appointed by God, to those who are illumined by his Spirit?

Those who reject me and don’t accept what I say have a judge – the word which I have spoken will judge them.

Reject: to set aside, to disesteem, neutralize or violate, bring to naught. In the sense of privation of union, of not placing in a passive or horizontal posture.8

Do you regularly ask the Lord God to show you the ways that you reject him and set aside, disesteem, bring his words to naught in the sense of privation of union, by refusing to live in the way that God has provided? How often do the words of your mouth and the meditation of your heart separate you from union with the Lord God?

“And I know that his command is eternal life. What I say and how I say it is simply what the Father has told me to say.”

What thoughts and questions and emotions arise? Does a word satisfy? Encourage? Convict? Prod? Instruct? Empower? Give hope?

You do not have his word abiding in you.

John 5:38-40 – and you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe [trust] the one whom he has sent. You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life. (ESV)

Note the relationship between having God’s word abiding in us and trusting Christ Jesus.

You do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not trust the one whom he has sent.
Abiding: to stay in a given place, state, relation or expectancy; be present, remain, tarry for thine own.9

Do we rely on words written in a book to give us life? Do we agree mentally and emotionally with those words written in a book while never having met the Living Word in the person and power of Christ Jesus? The words written in a book bear witness about me. Yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life.

What does abide in us? If not the Lord God’s word, then what?

You judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life.

Acts 13:46-47 – And Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly, saying, “It was necessary that the word of God be spoken first to you [Jews]. Since you thrust it aside and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles. For so the Lord has commanded us, saying, “‘I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.'” (ESV)

Do you and I make the same error as some of the Jews did in the days of Paul and Barnabas regarding the word of God? Or, like Paul and Barnabas, do we receive the light and allow it to shine through us to bring salvation to the ends of the earth?

They did not recognize him nor understand the word.

Acts 13:27-33 – For those who live in Jerusalem and their rulers, because they did not recognize him nor understand the utterances of the prophets, which are read every Sabbath, fulfilled them by condemning him. And though they found in him no guilt worthy of death, they asked Pilate to have him executed. And when they had carried out all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree and laid him in a tomb. But God raised him from the dead, and for many days he appeared to those who had come up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are now his witnesses to the people. And we bring you the good news that what God promised to the fathers, this he has fulfilled to us their children by raising Jesus, as also it is written in the second Psalm, “‘You are my Son, today I have begotten you.’ (ESV)

Because they did not recognize him,
Because they did not understand the utterances of the prophets, which are read every Sabbath,
They fulfilled the words of the prophets by condemning their Messiah.
But God raised him from the dead!
We bring you the good news!
God raised him from the dead!
What God promised, he has fulfilled by raising Jesus, saying
“You are my Son,
Today I have begotten you.”

Today I have begotten you.

Begotten: to procreate (properly, of the father, but by extension of the mother; figuratively, to regenerate. Bear, beget, be born, bring forth, conceive, be delivered of, make, spring.10

We bring you the good news!
God raised him from the dead!
And said, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you.”

You were dead because of your old nature.
God made you alive along with the Messiah by forgiving you all your sins.
He wiped away the bill of charges against us.
He removed it by nailing it to the cross, the execution-stake.
That you might live by the Spirit,
In the way that God has provided.
Planted. Transplanted. Rescued. Transferred. Family. Break forth, spread.
“You are my daughter, my son, my child, today I have begotten you.”

The firstborn from the dead.

Col 1:18-20 – And he [Jesus] is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross. (ESV)

Jesus is the head of the body.
Jesus is the beginning
Jesus is the firstborn from the dead
Jesus is preeminent in everything.
In Jesus, all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell
Through Jesus, God was pleased to reconcile all things to himself
Through Jesus, God is making peace with all things by the blood of his cross.
That you might live by the Spirit,
In the way that God has provided.
Planted. Transplanted. Rescued. Transferred. Family. Break forth, spread.

Do we have the slightest inkling of the magnitude of this precious gift of reconciliation? Do we have even the minutest experience with it?

The righteous.

The way that God has provided.
John 14:6 – Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (ESV)

God raised him from the dead!
“You are my Son, today I have begotten you.”
Planted. Transplanted. Rescued. Transferred. Family. Break forth, spread.

The Lord God will cause righteousness to sprout up.

Isa 61:11 – For as the earth brings forth its sprouts, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to sprout up, so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to sprout up before all the nations. (ESV)

The righteous.
The way that God has provided.
God raised him from the dead!
“You are my Son, today I have begotten you.”
The Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to sprout up.
Planted. Transplanted. Rescued. Transferred. Family. Break forth, spread.
Will cause to spring forth: to sprout, bear, bring forth, cause to, make to bud, grow.11

Man knows not how.

Mark 4:26-29 – And he said, “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground. He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how. The earth produces by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. But when the grain is ripe, at once he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.” (ESV)

The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground.
The man sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows
The man knows not how.
The earth produces by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear.
The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground.

The righteous.
The way that God has provided.
God raised him from the dead!
“You are my Son, today I have begotten you.”
The Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to sprout up.
Man knows not how.
Filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ,
To the glory and praise of God.

Read the texts again. Chew upon the words. Turn them over and over in your mind. Ask the Lord God what he wants you to receive from them and how he wants you to respond to them.

The seed is the word of God.

Luke 8:11 – Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. (ESV)

1 Peter 1:23-25 – You have been born again not from some seed that will decay, but from one that cannot decay, through the living Word of God that lasts forever. For all humanity is like grass, all its glory is like a wildflower — the grass withers, and the flower falls off; but the Word of Adonai [the Lord] lasts forever. Moreover, this Word is the Good News which has been proclaimed to you. (CJB)

The word which I have spoken will judge, the word given by the Father, will separate, select, choose, determine, pronounce judgment, administer affairs, govern, make a resolve, between the dead and the living, that we might live by the Spirit in the way that God has provided.

You have been born again through the living Word of God!
Born again
Born again from seed that cannot decay
Born again through the living Word of God that lasts forever
This seed, this Word is the Good News which was proclaimed to you.
God raised him from the dead!
Saying, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you.”

You were dead because of your old nature.
God made you alive along with the Messiah by forgiving you all your sins.
He wiped away the bill of charges against us.
He removed it by nailing it to the cross, the execution-stake.
That you might live by the Spirit
In the way that God has provided.

The Father who sent me has given me a command.
“The Father who sent me has given me a command, namely, what to say and how to say it. And I know that his command is eternal life.”

I am called by your name, O Lord.

Jer 15:16 – Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart, for I am called by your name, O Lord, God of hosts. (ESV)

The righteous.
The way that God has provided.
God raised him from the dead!
“You are my Son, today I have begotten you.”
The Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to sprout up
Filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ.
To the glory and praise of God.

Your words…
I ate them.
Planted. Transplanted. Rescued. Transferred. Family. Break forth, spread.
Your words…
I am called by your name, O Lord, God of hosts!
Your words…
We are called by your name, O Lord, God of hosts!

Read the texts again, setting aside your own thoughts, perceptions, judgments, your own agenda, to allow response from your inner depths to surface. What do you discover?

But it is the spirit in man, the breath of the Almighty, that makes him understand. (Job 32:8 ESV)

Become aware of your breath. The breath of the Almighty in you.

Breath by breath. Become conscious of the presence of the Almighty in you. Seek his strength. Seek his presence. Surrender to the influence of the breath of the Almighty that you may serve him.

Inhale.
Exhale.

You must rely on the breath of the Almighty, the Spirit of God who lives inside you, to make you understand Gods words, his Living Word, to discern the thoughts and intentions of your heart, to seek the interests of Jesus Christ and not your own.

With your inhalation draw the words of the Lord God deep within you.

With your exhalation empty yourself of all your own ideas, plans, thoughts, imaginations and words to make room for the words of God to take possession. Open yourself completely to what the Lord God wants to reveal to you about yourself and about him. Become reverently responsive to what he says.

Prov 16:20 – Whoever gives thought to the word will discover good, and blessed is he who trusts in the Lord. (ESV)

Inhale: (draw the words of the Lord God deep within you)

Whoever gives thought to the word will discover good,

Exhale. (empty yourself of self to allow the words of God to take possession)

Blessed is he who trusts in the Lord.

Wait, watch, listen, be still, be willing for the Lord God to transform you from within, revealing who you really are. Strive and reach for the goal, alive to the energy that he powerfully works in you as you rest, completely dependent upon him to reach the goal, united with the Messiah.

As you receive the Word of God into that deepest place of your being, the Lord God is rescuing you, he is loosening your bonds to your old nature, he is delivering you from your illusions and foolish boasting and transferring you to the kingdom of his Son. Through Jesus, our Messiah, God is gradually transforming you from within, revealing who you really are, becoming one spirit with him.

2 Peter 3:18 – But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen. (ESV)
