Being Transformed By the Spirit

Being renewed in fuller and fuller knowledge, closer and closer to the image of our Creator.

The sayings of our mouth and the meditation of our heart.

Ps 19:14 – Let the sayings of my mouth, And the meditation of my heart, Be for a pleasing thing before Thee, O Jehovah, my rock, and my redeemer! (YLT)

What do the sayings of your mouth and the meditation of your heart reveal about who you think you are? Are they in agreement with the words of the Lord God and the meditation of his heart?

As you spend time resting in the word of God daily, forgetting everything you know except Jesus the Messiah, crucified as a criminal, are you aware of a growing desire for your every word and thought to please the Lord? For your life to be one with his?

Forget everything except Jesus the Messiah.

1 Cor 2:2 – for I [Apostle Paul] had decided that while I was with you I would forget everything except Yeshua [Jesus] the Messiah, and even him only as someone who had been executed on a stake as a criminal. (CJB)

Have you made this same commitment? How is it impacting your relationship with yourself? With God the Father, our Lord Jesus Christ, and Holy Spirit? With others?

Put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit.

1 Peter 3:18 – For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, (ESV)

Read the words of Scripture slowly and reflectively. Let them settle deep in your soul and take root as the Spirit of God brings them to life in you.

What does it mean to be put to death in the flesh?

Learn to think like Jesus.

1 Peter 4:1-2 – Since Jesus went through everything you’re going through and more, learn to think like him. Think of your sufferings as a weaning from that old sinful habit of always expecting to get your own way. Then you’ll be able to live out your days free to pursue what God wants instead of being tyrannized by what you want. (MSG)

Let your life be shaped by God instead of things and feelings.

Col 3:3-5 – Your old life is dead. Your new life, which is your real life — even though invisible to spectators — is with Christ in God. He is your life. When Christ (your real life, remember) shows up again on this earth, you’ll show up, too — the real you, the glorious you. Meanwhile, be content with obscurity, like Christ. And that means killing off everything connected with that way of death: sexual promiscuity, impurity, lust, doing whatever you feel like whenever you feel like it, and grabbing whatever attracts your fancy. That’s a life shaped by things and feelings instead of by God. (MSG)

Christ is your life.

What does it mean to be made alive in the spirit?

God lives and breathes in you.

Rom 8:11 – It stands to reason, doesn’t it, that if the alive-and-present God who raised Jesus from the dead moves into your life, he’ll do the same thing in you that he did in Jesus, bringing you alive to himself? When God lives and breathes in you (and he does, as surely as he did in Jesus), you are delivered from that dead life. With his Spirit living in you, your body will be as alive as Christ’s! (MSG)

May God equip you that you may do his will.

Heb 13:20-21 – Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen. (ESV)

We are being transformed.

2 Cor 3:18 – And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit. (ESV)

With unveiled face
Unveiled: in the sense of reversal; open, taken away.1
Beholding the glory of the Lord
Transformed into the same image
From one degree of glory to another.
Being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit
This comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.
Forgetting everything you know except Jesus the Messiah, crucified as a criminal…

You are continually being renewed.

Col 3:9-11 – Never lie to one another; because you have stripped away the old self, with its ways, and have put on the new self, which is continually being renewed in fuller and fuller knowledge, closer and closer to the image of its Creator. The new self allows no room for discriminating between Gentile and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, foreigner, savage, slave, free man; on the contrary, in all, the Messiah is everything. (CJB)

You have stripped away the old self
You have put on the new self, which is continually being renewed
Fuller and fuller knowledge
Closer and closer to the image of its Creator
In all, in everyone, the Messiah is everything.

Fully share in God’s righteousness.

2 Cor 5:17-21 – Therefore, if anyone is united with the Messiah, he is a new creation — the old has passed; look, what has come is fresh and new! And it is all from God, who through the Messiah has reconciled us to himself and has given us the work of that reconciliation, which is that God in the Messiah was reconciling mankind to himself, not counting their sins against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore we are ambassadors of the Messiah; in effect, God is making his appeal through us. What we do is appeal on behalf of the Messiah, “Be reconciled to God! God made this sinless man be a sin offering on our behalf, so that in union with him we might fully share in God’s righteousness.” (CJB)

God made this sinless man be a sin offering on our behalf
So that
In union with him we might fully share in God’s righteousness.

Forgetting everything you know except Jesus the Messiah, crucified as a criminal…
God, through the Messiah has reconciled us to himself
And has given us the work of that reconciliation

Read the texts again. Chew upon these words. Turn them over and over in your mind and allow their significance to be absorbed by mind, body, soul and spirit.

The source.

1 Cor 1:30 – He [God] is the source of your life in Christ Jesus, whom God made our wisdom and our righteousness and sanctification and redemption. (ESV)

God is the source of our life in Christ Jesus.
In union with him we might fully share in God’s righteousness.

What is your part and what is God’s part in your transformation?

Phil 3:7-11 – But all these things that I once thought very worthwhile-now I’ve thrown them all away so that I can put my trust and hope in Christ alone. Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the priceless gain of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. I have put aside all else, counting it worth less than nothing, in order that I can have Christ, and become one with him, no longer counting on being saved by being good enough or by obeying God’s laws, but by trusting Christ to save me; for God’s way of making us right with himself depends on faith-counting on Christ alone. Now I have given up everything else-I have found it to be the only way to really know Christ and to experience the mighty power that brought him back to life again, and to find out what it means to suffer and to die with him. So whatever it takes, I will be one who lives in the fresh newness of life of those who are alive from the dead. (TLB)

I forget everything, let go everything so that I can put my trust and hope in Christ alone.
The priceless gain of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.
Become one with him
Trusting him to save me
Counting on Christ alone

Now I have given up everything else
I have found it to be the only way to really know Christ
I have found it to be the only way to experience the mighty power that brought him back to life again
I have found it to be the only way to find out what it means to suffer and to die with him

Now I have given up everything else.
So whatever it takes
I will be one who lives in the fresh newness of life
I will be one of those who are alive from the dead.

Read the texts again, setting aside your own thoughts, perceptions, judgments, your own agenda, to allow response from your inner depths to surface. What do you discover?

Being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit. Being renewed in fuller and fuller knowledge, closer and closer to the image of our Creator. Are you whole-heartedly and single-mindedly participating in this amazing transformation through intimate relationship with the Spirit of God?

But it is the spirit in man, the breath of the Almighty, that makes him understand. (Job 32:8 ESV)

Become aware of your breath. The breath of the Almighty in you.

Breath by breath. Become conscious of the presence of the Almighty in you. Seek his strength. Seek his presence. Surrender to the influence of the breath of the Almighty.

Inhale.
Exhale.

You must rely on the breath of the Almighty, the Spirit of God who lives inside you, to make you understand Gods words, to discern the thoughts and intentions of your heart, to seek the interests of Jesus Christ and not your own.

With your inhalation draw the words of the Lord God deep within you.

With your exhalation empty yourself of all your own ideas, plans, thoughts, imaginations and words to make room for the words of God to take possession. Open yourself completely to what the Lord God wants to reveal to you about yourself and about him.

Phil 3:8 – Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the priceless gain of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. I have put aside all else, counting it worth less than nothing, in order that I can have Christ, (TLB)

Inhale: (draw the words of the Lord God deep within you)

I have put aside all else, counting it worth less than nothing,

Exhale. (empty yourself of self to allow the words of God to take possession)

in order that I can have Christ,

Wait, watch, listen, be still, be willing for the Lord God to transform you from within, revealing who you really are. Strive and reach for the goal, alive to the energy that he powerfully works in you as you rest, completely dependent upon him to reach the goal, united with the Messiah.

As you receive the Word of God into that deepest place of your being, the Lord God is rescuing you, he is loosening your bonds to your old nature, he is delivering you from your illusions and foolish boasting. Through Jesus, our Messiah, God is gradually transforming you from within, revealing who you really are, becoming one spirit with him.

Inhale.
Exhale.
Breathe the Lord God’s words all day every day.

2 Cor 13:14 – the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, [is] with you all! Amen. (YLT)
