Meditative – The Presence

A presence more vital than daily bread, making known the path of life, satisfying, joyful, delightful.

Words – Thoughts – And Nurturing Our Souls

The sayings of my mouth
And the meditation of my heart
Are powerful
Leading either to separation or unity, to fear or to love, to lies or to truth, to death or to life.

When the sayings of our mouth and the meditation of our heart are grounded upon and flow from God’s living Word, they are infused with the healing and life-changing power of Love and Grace and Fellowship.

This meditation is about the path to life. Abundant Life. Awakening to our total dependence upon the continual, unbroken Presence of God is vital in our journey in recovering spiritual truth, and rediscovering who we really are. It is taken from the Study Blog titled The Presence if you’d like to check out the Scripture texts that it’s based on.

My prayer for you is that you will encounter the breath of the Almighty as you experience and contemplate this meditation and that your weary soul will be satisfied, and your languishing soul will be replenished.

But it is the spirit in man, the breath of the Almighty, that makes him understand. Job 32:8 (ESV)

Do you regularly focus on your soul’s condition and needs as you do your body’s condition and needs? Have you found a practice or skill that feeds and enables all your faculties and affections-will, heart, imagination, conscience-to flow harmoniously as each find in God, I AM, the perfect influence for their reparation and development?

A child of the flesh,
Cut off from Christ.
A child of the promise,
A divine assurance of good.
Who am I?

The counsel of the wicked is far from me.
Is my complaint against man?
Why should I not be impatient?
Look at me and be appalled and lay your hand over your mouth.
When I remember I am dismayed, and shuddering seizes my flesh.
Why do the wicked live, reach old age, and grow mighty in power?

What wounds and losses cause such thoughts, words and feelings to arise in you?

They [the wicked] say to God,
Depart from us! We do not desire the knowledge of your ways.
What is the Almighty that we should serve him?
And what profit do we get if we pray to him?
Behold, is not their prosperity in their hand?

How often is it that the lamp of the wicked is put out?
That their calamity comes upon them?
That God distributes pains in his anger?
That they are like straw before the wind, and like chaff that the storm carries away?

Are there such questions, judgments, complaints that relentlessly swirl round and round in your mind?
Perhaps the question: “Why?” creating constant noise. Disagreeable. Unsettling.
Are there wounds in body or emotions that incite anger or depression or hate or envy or bitterness?
Is your soul in a state of agitation, turmoil, distress, confusion, discord, disharmony, grating?

“Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?” the Lord God asks.
Who is this who is not in a relation of rest in Christ?
Who is this who has no confidence in the One who has the infinite power of God at his command?
Who is this whose faculties and affections – will, heart, imagination, conscience – are in opposition to the Lord?

“Be still and know that I AM God.”
Conscious. Aware.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Lie outstretched (literally or figuratively)
Place yourself in a passive posture
Focus intently on your breath to the exclusion of all else.
For it is the spirit in you,
The breath of the Almighty,
That makes you understand.
Spirit can be known only by spirit
God’s Spirit and your spirit in open communion.
Conscious. Aware.

Be still
Open heart
Open mind
Open body
Open spirit
Wait
Prepare
Anticipate
Look
Listen
Tarry
Patient, confident expectation

“Be still and know that I AM God.”
Conscious. Aware.

In Christ we find out who we are
In Christ we find out what we are living for
In Christ
A fixed position
A relation of rest.

Long before we first heard of Christ
He had his eye on us
He had designs on us for glorious living
Part of the overall purpose he is working out in everything and everyone.
He is kind to the ungrateful and the evil.
He is merciful.
He loves his enemies.
He makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good.
He sends rain on the just and on the unjust.

A child of the flesh,
Cut off from Christ.
A child of the promise,
A divine assurance of good.
Who am I?

In Christ we find out who we are
In Christ we find out what we are living for
In Christ
A fixed position
A relation of rest.

In him we have obtained an inheritance
Having been predestined
According to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will.

Are you aware of your inheritance?
Do you know you’ve been predestined?
Predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will?
Kind to the ungrateful and the evil.
Merciful.
Loves his enemies.
Makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good.
Sends rain on the just and on the unjust.

In Christ we find out who we are
In Christ we find out what we are living for
In Christ
A fixed position
A relation of rest.
Instrumentality (medially or constructively)
The condition, quality, or fact of serving as a means or agency.
What means or agency ferments within you?
What/whose teachings, purposes, desires…are spreading and causing gradual change in you?
Are you aware?

In Christ we find out who we are
In Christ we find out what we are living for
In Christ
A fixed position in place, time, state
A relation of rest
Helping to construct; leading to improvements or advances; formative.
Grace. Divine favor. Unconcealed truth. Real. Genuine. Sincere. To deal faithfully with anyone.

In Christ we find out who we are
In Christ we find out what we are living for
In Christ
A fixed position in place, time, state
A relation of rest
Medially, in the middle of
Between our predestination according to the counsel of the Lord God’s will
And the time we acquire possession of our inheritance.

In Christ we find out who we are
In Christ we find out what we are living for
In Christ
Trust!
Expect in advance of confirmation.
Hear. Understand the word of truth.
Believe.
Convinced, persuaded, rely by inward certainty, assent to evidence or authority
Trust his word, his promise, his intention, the counsel of his will.
Rest.
In his work!
In Christ.

That you may know,
I do not cease praying,
That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ
May give you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation
To make you intelligent and discerning in knowing him personally and fully
Having the eyes of your hearts enlightened
Your eyes focused and clear
So that you can see exactly what he is calling you to do
So that you can grasp the immensity of this glorious way of life he has for you,
That you may know.

In Christ,
When you hear and understand the truth,
Trust the message of your salvation,
Entrust yourself to Christ
Place yourself in a passive posture before the Lord God
Open yourself to the love and presence and action of Christ within
You find yourself home free
Signed, sealed and delivered by the Holy Spirit.

Are you aware?
You have received a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Jesus Christ.
Are you aware?
Having the eyes of your heart enlightened.

Spirit can be known only by spirit
God’s Spirit and our spirits in open communion.

It is you, Lord God, who light my lamp
The Lord my God lightens my darkness.

A child of the flesh,
Cut off from Christ,
Set their minds on the things of the flesh,
Are not the children of God.

A child of the promise,
A divine assurance of good.
Set their minds on the things of the Spirit
Are God-determined as children of God.

Who am I?
From now on we regard no one according to the flesh
Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer.
If anyone is in Christ, united with Christ, they are a new creation.
The old has passed away
The new has come
All this is from God.
In Christ,
God was reconciling the world to himself
Not counting their trespasses against them.

Though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad—
In order that God’s purpose of divine selection might continue
Divine selection
Not because of works
But because of God’s call
God’s purpose.
God’s intention; specifically, the show-bread,
The Presence-bread.
God’s intention,
The continual Presence of the Lord
The Presence more vital than one’s daily bread.
God’s intention,
The people’s awareness of dependence on his continued, unbroken Presence
The provision for their spiritual and physical needs.

Unleavened bread
Presence-bread
A continual reminder that human beings do not live by bread alone
An ongoing remembrance of human being’s continued and unbroken dependence upon God.
Presence
Promise
A divine assurance of good
God’s purpose, intention
Presence.
Presence,
The continual presence of the Lord,
More vital than one’s daily, physical bread.
United with Christ
A new creation
Presence
Stirring gratitude and adoration and worship.
Making known the path of life, satisfying, joyful, delightful.

Presence.
You, Lord God, make known to me
The path of life
In your presence, Lord God,
There is fullness of joy.
At your right hand, Lord God,
Are pleasures forevermore.
Your presence, Lord God
More vital to me than my daily bread.
Let me never forget my continued and unbroken dependence upon you
To provide my spiritual and my physical needs.
Your presence, continued, unbroken, my life, my well-being.
To you, I offer all that I am, all that I have. I lie myself down passive before you. Open to your presence. Willing for your will to be done in me, to me, with me, for me.

Your presence
Makes it known that I have found favor in your sight
Your presence
Makes me distinct
Your presence
Reveals me, a child of promise

Please show me now your ways, Lord God
That I may know you in order to find favor in your sight
Let me know whom you will send with me

And the Lord God said
My presence will go with you

See.
Hear.
Experience.
Rest.
In Christ.
Believe!
Trust!
Rest!
In his work!

And the Lord God said
I will give you rest.

In Christ we find out who we are
In Christ we find out what we are living for
In Christ, united with Christ, a new creation.
The old has passed away
The new has come
All this is from God
Reconciliation
To change mutually
To form in combination, put together
United
A new creation

As you read each word/phrase pause and listen for the Lord’s promise/revelation/request

Settle down
Dwell
Stay
Let fall
Place
Let alone
Withdraw
Give comfort
Cease
Lay
Let down
Be quiet
Remain
In Christ.

A child of the flesh,
Cut off from Christ.
A child of the promise,
A divine assurance of good.
Who am I?

“Be still and know that I AM God.”
Conscious. Aware.

How many are my iniquities and my sins?
Make me know my transgression and my sin.

Know.
But don’t rest here.
Don’t settle down here.
Don’t get stuck here.
This is merely the first step in the process of waking up.

Who am I?
From now on we regard no one according to the flesh
Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer.
In Christ we find out who we are
In Christ we find out what we are living for
In Christ, united with Christ, we are a new creation.
The old has passed away
The new has come
All this is from God

Make me hear intelligently, with attention
Of your love in the morning
Because I rely on you.
I turn back to love
To your welcoming Presence
I put my confidence in you
I hurry to you for refuge
Make me know the way I should walk
Because I entrust myself to you
I lift up my soul to you
Free
Wide open
Spontaneous.

You have placed all my faults before you, Lord God.
You have placed my secret sins in the full light of your presence.
Everything exposed to the light is revealed clearly for what it is
Flesh
Spirit
Anything revealed is light.
Get up, sleeper!
Arise from the dead
And the Messiah will shine on you.

Make me know!
Make me hear!
I rely on you
I entrust myself to you
In the full light of your presence
Continued, unbroken
Dependence on you, Lord God.
I rest.
My eyes focused and clear
So that I can see exactly what you are calling me to do
So that I can grasp the immensity of this glorious way of life you have for me
Presence
Continual, unbroken
More vital than daily bread
Making known the path of life, satisfying, joyful, delightful

Be still
Open heart
Open mind
Open body
Open spirit
Wait
Prepare
Anticipate
Look
Listen
Tarry
Patient, confident expectation

Be silent with a sense of anticipation. It is here in this openness and focused attention and intention where the breath of the Almighty will make you understand that you really are who he says you are in Christ. Of God. Originating from God. A child of promise. Having obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will. His presence gives you identity and purpose. Trust the One who seals you with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of your inheritance until you acquire possession of it. Allow praise and gratitude to well up in awe.

Close your eyes. Stay in this position of quiet anticipation for as long as you can.

When ready
Open your eyes
Breathe in
Breathe out

Rest. Breathe. Live in this position of openness to the love and Presence of God and God’s action within you continually in Christ.

2 Tim 4:22 – The Lord be with your spirit. Grace be with you. (ESV)
