Powers of Discernment

They themselves are but beasts; they do not consider, do not know, do not discern. God has done it, so that people fear before him.

Ps 19:14 – Let the sayings of my mouth, And the meditation of my heart, Be for a pleasing thing before Thee, O Jehovah, my rock, and my redeemer! (YLT)

The sayings of my mouth.

Expressions that expose what I perceive to be truth and wisdom.

The meditation of my heart.

To earnestly, deeply think and to murmur with tenderness, evoking a strong emotional response.

My soul.
My soul is cast down. My soul is in turmoil within me. Why?
The oppression of my enemy [hating adversary].

Have you become aware that your soul is in turmoil within you more often than it is in a state of perfect calm, fully, deeply satisfied?

Luke 2:34-35 – and Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, ‘Lo, this [one] is set for the falling and rising again of many in Israel, and for a sign spoken against — (and also thine own soul shall a sword pass through) — that the reasonings of many hearts may be revealed.’ (YLT)

Set. To lie outstretched literally or figuratively. To place in a passive or horizontal posture; utterly prostrate.
Set. That the reasonings of many hearts may be revealed.
Revealed. To take the cover off; disclose.

The reasonings of your heart

How much time and effort do you spend in ferreting out the reasonings of your heart and the reasonings of the Lord God’s heart? Why?

Job 37:23-24 – The Almighty—we cannot find him; he is great in power; justice and abundant righteousness he will not violate. Therefore men fear him; he does not regard any who are wise in their own conceit.” (ESV)

The Almighty
We cannot find him…

So why should we put time and effort into persistently searching to discover the hidden truth about the reasonings of our heart and the Almighty’s heart?

Justice and abundant righteousness he will not violate

Justice/Judgment: favorable or unfavorable verdict pronounced judicially, including the act, the place, the suit, the crime, and the penalty.1
Justice/Righteousness: rightness, strict honesty, uprightness of character; virtue;2

Verdict pronounced

Favorable or unfavorable verdict pronounced
From abundant rightness, strict honesty, virtue
He will not violate
Therefore,
People fear him;
Fear: afraid, dread, terror.
Fear: reverence.3
The Almighty does not regard (see) any who are wise in their own conceit.

What do you know about the Almighty’s great power? What do you know about the Almighty’s justice and abundant righteousness? Do you know love as power? Do you know grace and mercy as justice and abundant righteousness?

Do you fear the Almighty? With what kind of fear do you generally fear him?

If you do not fear the Almighty, why do you not fear?

Why do we not fear The Almighty?

Might we not fear The Almighty because he does not regard (see) any who are wise in their own conceit, stuck in their ego-consciousness, who are like beasts, unable to be reasoned with? Do we shut the Lord God out and miss the point when we think we have rights, power, control and authority over ourselves, others or our destiny?

Eccl 9:11 – Again I saw that under the sun the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favor to those with knowledge, but time and chance happen to them all. (ESV)

Eccl 3:9-15 – What gain has the worker from his toil? I have seen the business that God has given to the children of man to be busy with. He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end. I perceived that there is nothing better for them than to be joyful and to do good as long as they live; also that everyone should eat and drink and take pleasure in all his toil—this is God’s gift to man. I perceived that whatever God does endures forever; nothing can be added to it, nor anything taken from it. God has done it, so that people fear before him [the face]. That which is, already has been; that which is to be, already has been; and God seeks what has been driven away. (ESV)

Eccl 3:16-18 – Moreover, I saw under the sun that in the place of justice, even there was wickedness [a wrong, to disturb, violate], and in the place of righteousness, even there was wickedness [a wrong, to disturb, violate]. I said in my heart, God will judge the righteous and the wicked, for there is a time for every matter and for every work. I said in my heart with regard to the children of man that God is testing them that they may see that they themselves are but beasts. (ESV)

Time and chance.
The business that God has given to people to be busy with.
God has made everything beautiful in its time.
God has put eternity [perpetuity] into people’s heart, yet [concealed, hidden past and future] so that they cannot find out what God has done from beginning to end.

There is nothing better for them than to be joyful and to do good as long as they live;
Eat and drink and take pleasure in their toil.
This is God’s gift to human beings.
Whatever God does, endures forever.
Nothing can be added to what God does.
Nothing can be taken away from what God does.
God has done it
So that people fear before him.

Eccl 1:9-11 – What was will be again, what happened will happen again. There’s nothing new on this earth. Year after year it’s the same old thing. Does someone call out, “Hey, this is new”? Don’t get excited — it’s the same old story. Nobody remembers what happened yesterday. And the things that will happen tomorrow? Nobody’ll remember them either. Don’t count on being remembered. (MSG)

God will judge

In the place of… a standing, a spot, a condition of body or mind.4
God will judge. God will pronounce sentence for or against. God will vindicate or punish. God will govern.5
Day by day. Hour by hour. Moment by moment.

Lam 3:37-38 – Who has spoken and it came to pass, unless the Lord has commanded it? Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that good and bad come? (ESV)

1 Cor 3:18-20 – Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you thinks that he is wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is folly with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their craftiness,” and again, “The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.” (ESV)

The Almighty
We cannot find him…
God seeks what has been driven away.

Time and chance happen to all. (Be aware of what you take credit for and so miss the fear of the Lord God!)
Whatever God does, endures forever. Whatever God does, he’s done it so that people fear before him.

That which is, already has been; that which is to be, already has been. (Where do you fit into what God does? How does what you do fit into what God does? Do you respond to what the Lord God does the way that he desires you to?)

God has done it so that people fear before him.
God is testing human beings, that they may see that they themselves are but beasts.

Beast: from an unused root, probably meaning to be mute. Properly, a dumb beast; especially any large four-footed animal, often collective. Cattle.6

Become a fool

Have you discovered this about yourself? Do you see that you yourself, separate from the Lord God, out of communication and communion with the Lord God, are but a beast? Are you aware that when out of communion with fellow human beings, you are but a beast?

Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you thinks that he is wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise.
Become a fool.

Fool: Dull or stupid as if shut up. To shut the mouth; a secret or “mystery” through the idea of silence imposed by initiation into religious rites.7

Eccl 5:1-2 – Watch your step when you go to the house of God. Offering to listen is better than fools offering sacrifices, because they don’t discern whether or not they are doing evil. Don’t speak impulsively — don’t be in a hurry to give voice to your words before God. For God is in heaven, and you are on earth; so let your words be few. (CJB)

Why does the Lord God want us to fear before him? Why does he want us to see that we ourselves are but beasts? Are these desires of the Lord God related to his activity regarding both the vessel of wrath and the vessel of mercy that is each of us?

From the mouth of the Most High good and bad come. (How do you respond to the words of the Most High? Do you respond to the good and the bad in the same way, seeing that you are but a beast and then fear in awe before the Lord God?)

The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile. (Have you discovered this in yourself?)

Does pondering these Scripture texts reveal anything about the reasonings of your heart and/or the reasonings of the Lord God’s heart?

Another reason we don’t fear The Almighty

Maybe we don’t fear The Almighty because our hearts are held captive by someone/something else.

Isa 44:18-20 – They know not, nor do they discern, for he has shut their eyes, so that they cannot see, and their hearts, so that they cannot understand. No one considers, nor is there knowledge or discernment to say, “Half of it [regarding wooden idols] I burned in the fire; I also baked bread on its coals; I roasted meat and have eaten. And shall I make the rest of it an abomination? Shall I fall down before a block of wood?” He feeds on ashes; a deluded heart has led him astray, and he cannot deliver himself or say, “Is there not a lie in my right hand?” (ESV)

John 8:43-47 – Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word. You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has nothing to do with the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me. Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God.” (ESV)

Vessel of wrath. They themselves are but beasts. Disconnected from the breath of the Almighty. Unable to be reasoned with. God’s Spirit and their spirit not in open communion.

Whoever is of God hears the words of God.
Of God. Denoting origin (the point whence action or motion proceeds), from, out (of place, time, or cause).8
You cannot bear to hear my word. The reason why you do not hear my words is that you are not of God.

Ouch!

Unlike other human beings, Jesus considers. Jesus knows. Jesus discerns. And he proclaims truth. His words cut. His words also deliver and heal when we can respond by giving him our deluded heart.

God will judge. God will pronounce sentence for or against. God will vindicate or punish. God will govern.
Day by day. Hour by hour. Moment by moment.
Favorable or unfavorable verdict pronounced: “of God” or “but beast.”
Verdict pronounced from abundant rightness, strict honesty, virtue.
We can rely on God’s verdict because he will not violate his character.
Because of this, we fear/revere.

Of whom do you originate?

From where do your words, thoughts, motives and actions originate? Do you regularly place yourself in a position to hear and respond to the words of the One who considers, knows, discerns, and pronounces truth?

Heb 5:7-14 – In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered. And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.

About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil. (ESV)

He was heard because of his reverence.

Reverence: caution, careful to consider all related circumstances before acting, judging, or deciding; devotion, loyalty, dread, regard with awe9

You have become dull of hearing…

This seems to be a common and universal problem among human beings.

They feed (graze, rule, associate with) on ashes.

Prov 15:14 – The mind of a person with discernment seeks knowledge, but the mouth of a fool feeds on folly. (CJB)

A deluded heart has led them astray.
They cannot deliver themselves.
They cannot discern that there is a lie in their right hand.
They do not consider.
They do not know.
They do not discern.
They cannot bear to hear God’s words.
They are not of God.
Who they are, what they say, what they think and do, what they desire and what they pursue does not originate of God.

In the days of his flesh
Jesus learned obedience though what he suffered

Obedience: attentive hearkening, compliance, submission. To hear under, as a subordinate, to listen attentively, to heed or conform to a command or authority.10

The fruit of suffering

Jesus learned attentive hearkening through what he suffered
And being made perfect, in hearing and conforming to authority, he became the souce of eternal salvation
To all who obey him.
To all who hear under him as a subordinate, to all who listen attentively, to all who heed and conform
To his authority,
Christ Jesus became the source of eternal salvation
Becoming perfect
Through what he suffered.

About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain
Since you have become dull of hearing, sluggish, lazy, stupid.
Unskilled in the word of righteousness.
Unskilled, inexperienced, ignorant
Unskilled in the word

Word: Something said, thought, reasoning or motive, a computation, specifically the Divine expression, i.e. Christ.11

Unskilled in the word of righteousness.
Righteousness: equity of character or act. Fair. Just. Innocent. Holy.12
Unskilled in the Divine expression
Unskilled in Christ
Unskilled in justice
Unskilled in innocence
Unskilled in holiness

Receive healing

But how?

How can we receive healing and correction of our dull, sluggish, lazy, stupid hearing?
How can we become skilled in the word of righteousness?
How can we become of God, so that we can hear the words of God?

Have your powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.

Practice/exercise: to practice naked in the games, train. Nude.13

How do we train our powers of discernment?
With attention and intention.

Heb 4:13 – And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account. (ESV)

Job 26:6 – Sheol is naked before God, and Abaddon has no covering. (ESV)

Perhaps we begin to train our powers of discernment by becoming naked, exposed, vulnerable, honest, aware of reality from the Lord God’s perspective. Maybe we allow the façades that we hide behind to be removed. We let our justifications fall away. We set aside our confidence in our good intentions, our desire for people’s approval, and the world’s idea of success and worth when opposed to the Lord God’s. Maybe we accept suffering as the means of our healing, the path to hearing and discerning. We ourselves are but beasts apart from God, ignorant of his word and ways. Unable to discern. Unable to deliver ourselves from our ignorance and lack of skill in the Divine expression.

The reward

What is the reward of constant practice to distinguish good from evil?

2 Cor 5:1-5 – For we know that if the tent, which is our earthly home, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling, if indeed by putting it on we may not be found naked. For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened—not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. (ESV)

What practices might you nurture in body, mind, heart and spirit to help you distinguish good from evil?

Ps 46:10 – “Desist, and learn that I am God, supreme over the nations, supreme over the earth.” (CJB)

Job 37:23-24 – “Mighty God! Far beyond our reach! Unsurpassable in power and justice! It’s unthinkable that he’d treat anyone unfairly. So bow to him in deep reverence, one and all! If you’re wise, you’ll most certainly worship him.” (MSG)

Job 34:2-4 – “Hear my words, you wise men, and give ear to me, you who know; for the ear tests words as the palate tastes food. Let us choose what is right; let us know among ourselves what is good. (ESV)

Ps 119:103-104 – How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Through your precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way. (ESV)

1 Cor 2:14-16 – The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. The spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one. “For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ. (ESV)

What constant practice will you adopt today to move from the state of being but a beast, not considering, not knowing, not discerning, to being of God, able to hear his word, to understand, to know what is good? What constant practice will you adopt today to train your powers of discernment, to develop the mind of Christ, to be able to distinguish good from evil?

The Almighty
We cannot find him
God seeks what has been driven away
So that they fear in awe before him.

Interact with the words of Scripture through deep, careful study.

Then move beyond logic and reason; move from head to heart to spirit. Anticipate unifying of body, mind and spirit to mirror and imitate the mind and life of Jesus.

Meditate. Experience the word of Scripture bodily by moaning, growling, uttering, speaking aloud each word, syllable by syllable. Experience the words of Scripture expressing the longing and desire and hope in the depth of your own soul. Become acquainted with your longing. Anticipate that your soul’s longing will be satisfied, its hunger will be filled with good things, and it will be healed and made complete again. Let the inspired word of God arouse feelings of awe.

2 Cor 13:14 – the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, [is] with you all! Amen. (YLT)

Contemplate. Sit quietly without thinking, without murmuring. Simply be. Become conscious of your companions.

Stay in this place of rest and fellowship for as long as you can.

When finished, select just one word or phrase and carry it with you all day, thinking about it, murmuring it, holding it, treasuring it. Let it soak deep into your soul. Tomorrow meditate on the entire text again. Select the same word or phrase or a different one to carry with you all day, thinking about it, murmuring it, holding it, treasuring it. Do this practice every day. Let God’s Word begin to fill your soul with good things.

I ponder every morsel of wisdom from you, I attentively watch how you’ve done it. I relish everything you’ve told me of life, I won’t forget a word of it. (Ps 119:15-16 MSG)

But it is the spirit in man, the breath of the Almighty, that makes him understand. (Job 32:8)

I encourage you to look for ways and practices to help you become aware of Holy Spirit and to relinquish all that you have and all that you are to Holy Spirit’s convicting, enlightening, restorative ministrations.

See with a different eye. See through the eye of grace, the grace that is being brought to you in the revelation of Jesus Christ. Understand with a different mind, the mind of Christ. Know through the aid of these divine influences upon your heart.

1 thought on “Powers of Discernment

  1. Ignatius Loyola (1491–1556), the founder of the Jesuits, developed a method for spiritual direction that is highly sensitive, both intellectually and psychologically. His Exercises lead to a way of practice. They discover the cases in which the soul is trapped and instruct the exercitant in the “discernment of spirits,” of those inner and outer voices and impulses that continually influence us. The discernment is carried out in three steps: One has (1) “to sense the various stirrings that occur in the soul”; (2) “to recognize them,” that is, to understand their origin and goal and to make a judgment on them whether they lead constructively to the meaning-goal of my life, or destructively lead away from it; and (3) to take a position toward these stirrings, that is, to accept them or reject them.14 The goal of the Exercises is to find ways to Christian freedom.
