Meditative – May God Make His Face Shine Upon Us

Death and life are in the power of the tongue. A new word, a new commandment, is true in Christ Jesus and in you.

Words – Thoughts – And Nurturing Our Souls

The sayings of my mouth
And the meditation of my heart
Are powerful
Leading either to separation or unity, to fear or to love, to lies or to truth, to darkness or to light, to death or to life.

When the sayings of our mouth and the meditation of our heart are grounded upon and flow from God’s living Word, they are infused with the healing and life-changing power of Love and Grace and Fellowship.

This meditation is about the path to life. It seems that our words, thoughts, and meditations never cease, yet how aware are we of the power behind them, the motivations behind them, and the fruit that they bear? Becoming intimately familiar with the tongue of the Righteous One is a key component in our journey in recovering spiritual truth, and rediscovering who we really are. It is taken from the Study Blog titled May God Make His Face Shine Upon Us if you’d like to check out the Scripture texts that it’s based on.

My prayer for you is that you will encounter the breath of the Almighty as you experience and contemplate this meditation and that your weary soul will be satisfied, and your languishing soul will be replenished.

But it is the spirit in man, the breath of the Almighty, that makes him understand. Job 32:8 (ESV)

Do you regularly focus on your soul’s condition and needs as you do your body’s condition and needs?

Breathe in. Deeply. Breathe in until your lungs are completely full.
Hold your breath momentarily.
Thank the One who graciously gives you breath
And with breath, life.

Breathe out. Deeply. Breathe out until your lungs are completely empty.
Embrace the emptiness
Acknowledge the pain
Accept death that results from having no breath
Acknowledge that you are utterly dependent upon the One who graciously gives you breath
And with breath, life.

Now receive new life as you gratefully inhale a new, fresh breath.
Life.
What do you know about life?

Death is in the power of the tongue.
Life is in the power of the tongue.
The power of words.
Death. Life.
Thoughts. Meditations. Heart. Mind. Will. Emotions. Motives influenced and empowered by words.
The tongue.
Death.
Life.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Focus intently on your breath to the exclusion of all else.
For it is the spirit in you,
The breath of the Almighty,
That makes you understand.

Our two selves.
The vessel of wrath.
The vessel of mercy.
Are you familiar with both vessels?
Are you familiar with the influencing tongue of both?
Death is in the power of the tongue.
Life is in the power of the tongue.

What do you know about life?
Vessel of wrath.
Mired in that old stagnant life of sin.
Missing the mark.
Stagnant.
No motion. No current. No flowing.
Not active. Not alert.
Foul from lack of movement.
Ensnared by self-interest.
Seduced. Persuaded to do disloyal things.
Breathing
But not knowing,
Breathing
But not understanding.
Illusion.
Dead.

What do you know about life?
Vessel of wrath.
You look to the world to tell you how to live.
The world doesn’t know the first thing about living
For help, they look to man, and not to God
For help, they look to flesh, and not to spirit
You are against me [the Lord God],
You are against your helper

Appearing to be alive
But breathing
By filling your lungs with polluted unbelief.
Then exhaling disobedience.
What do you know about life, vessel of wrath?

What do you know about life?
Vessel of mercy.

Immense in mercy and with an incredible love, the Lord God embraced us.
Accepted us. Adopted us.
Encircled us. Surrounded us.
Included us.
In Christ.
He took our sin-dead lives and made us alive in Christ.
He did this all on his own, with no help from us!
Then he picked us up and set us down in highest heaven in company with Jesus, our Messiah.
Holy and blameless before him.
Filling our lungs with pure belief,
Steadfast love and the knowledge of God,
So that we exhale single-minded devotion to the Lord God.
Constant motion. Current flowing continuously. Active. Alert, even when we are at rest.

Vessel of wrath.
Death is in the power of the tongue.
Vessel of mercy.
Life is in the power of the tongue.

Those who love the tongue and its words
Will eat its fruit.
What fruit are you eating?
Do you know?
Are you eating the fruit of death?
Are you eating the fruit of life?
What do you know about life?

A soothing tongue, a wholesome tongue
Is curative like a medicine.
A soothing tongue, a wholesome tongue
Mends as with stitching.
A soothing tongue, a wholesome tongue
Is deliverance. Succor. Aid. Help in time of need.
A soothing tongue, a wholesome tongue
Undisturbed. Calm. Quiet. Tranquil.
A soothing tongue is a tree of life.
What do you know about life?

When a tongue twists truth, authority, justice, propriety,
Deviating from what is right,
Is obstinate and contrary,
Then the tongue breaks the spirit.
When a tongue twists truth, authority, justice, propriety,
Then the tongue
Fractures
Breaches
Crushes
Quenches
The spirit.
Shuts off the flow
Stops the movement
Cuts off the breath
Of the Almighty.
Makes stagnant.
Brings death.
What do you know about life?

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Focus intently on your breath to the exclusion of all else.
For it is the spirit in you,
The breath of the Almighty,
That makes you understand.
Spirit can be known only by spirit
God’s Spirit and your spirit in open communion.

Death is in the power of the tongue.
Life is in the power of the tongue.
What do you know about life?

What did David, the psalmist, and others like him know about life?
They sought the Lord God,
Carefully and diligently,
Asked boldly and urgently,
In worship,
May the Lord cut off all flattering lips.
May the Lord cut off the tongue that makes great boasts.
Cut off.
Destroy.
Consume.
Cut off.
To covenant.
To make an alliance or bargain.
To be joined to God in loving service.
To know eternal fellowship with God
Through Christ Jesus, our redeemer.
Word.
Cut.
Passing between pieces of flesh.
The Word of the Lord God
Passing between my lips.
Covenant.

They made a covenant:
Set a guard, O Lord,
Set a guard over my mouth
Keep watch, O Lord,
Keep watch over the door of my lips!

Covenant.
To cut.
Word.
Statute.
Precepts.
Testimony.
Law.
Lovingkindness.
Joined.

Covenant.
For the word of God
Is living
For the word of God
Is active.
The word of God is sharp
Sharper than any two-edged sword
The word of God pierces
Piercing to the division of soul and of spirit
Piercing to the division of joints and marrow
The word of God discerns
Discerning the thoughts
Discerning the intentions of the heart.

Covenant.
Cut off my flattering lips, Lord God
Cut off my tongue that makes great boasts
Cut off my lying lips
Cut off my deceitful tongue
Cut them off with your living and active word, Lord God.
A soothing tongue, a wholesome tongue, is a tree of life.

Let the sayings of my mouth
And the meditation of my heart
Be for a pleasing thing before thee,
O Jehovah, my rock, and my redeemer!
My righteousness.
My victory.
My deliverance.
I wait.
I look to you, Lord God.
In you, I hope.
Make me a loyal servant,
That I might mirror you.

Death is in the power of the tongue.
Life is in the power of the tongue.
What do you know about life?

None is righteous.
No one understands.
No one seeks for God.
No one is loyal to God.
No one demonstrates mercy.
No one has known the way of peace.
There is no fear of God before their eyes.
They use their tongues to deceive.
Their mouth is full of curses. Bitterness.
What do you know about life, O vessel of wrath?

Be not like a horse or mule
Without understanding
It is the spirit in man, the breath of the Almighty, that makes him understand.
Be not like a horse or mule
Which must be curbed with bit and bridle, or it will not stay near.
But trust in the Lord.
A soothing tongue, a wholesome tongue, is a tree of life.
Steadfast love
Steadfast love surrounds the one who trusts in the Lord.
It is the spirit in man, the breath of the Almighty, that makes him understand.

Arrange in an orderly manner
Submit
Subordinate
Put in subjection
Set
Lie outstretched
Place yourself, your tongue and your lips, in a passive posture
Utterly prostrate.

Death is in the power of the tongue.
Life is in the power of the tongue.
What do you know about life?

Covenant.
When I kept it all inside
My bones turned to powder
My words became daylong groans.
The pressure never let up
All the juices of my life dried up.
Then I let it all out.

I said,
I’ll make a clean breast of my failures to God.
Suddenly!
The pressure was gone
My guilt dissolved
My sin disappeared.

Death is in the power of the tongue.
Life is in the power of the tongue.
What do you know about life?

Covenant.
To cut.

Knowing eternal fellowship with my Lord and God.

For the word of God

Beloved,
I am writing you no new commandment
But an old commandment
That you had from the beginning

Death is in the power of the tongue.
Life is in the power of the tongue.
What do you know about life?

Are you eating the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil?
Are you eating the fruit of the tongue that twists things?
Deviating from what is right,
Obstinate and contrary,
Breaking, crushing, quenching the spirit.

Or are you eating the fruit from the tree of life?
Beloved,
I am writing you no new commandment
But an old commandment
That you had from the beginning.
The old commandment is the word that you have heard.
At the same time
It is a new commandment that I am writing to you
A new commandment
Which is true in him [Christ Jesus]
And which is true in you
Because the darkness is passing away
The stagnation is passing away
For the word of God
Is living
For the word of God
Is active.
And the true light is already shining.
In him
And in you.

We are not competent in ourselves
Our competence is from God
He has made us competent
To be workers
Serving a new covenant
The essence of which is not a written text
But the Spirit.
For the written text brings death
But the Spirit gives life.

Death is in the power of the tongue.
Life is in the power of the tongue.
What do you know about life?

May God be gracious to us.
May God be merciful to us.
May God stoop in kindness to us.
May God favor us.
May God implore us.
May God move us to favor by petition.

A soothing tongue, a wholesome tongue
Is curative like a medicine.
A soothing tongue, a wholesome tongue
Mends as with stitching.
A soothing tongue, a wholesome tongue
Is deliverance.
A soothing tongue, a wholesome tongue
Undisturbed. Calm. Quiet. Tranquil.
A soothing tongue is a tree of life.

May God bless us.
May God cause us to kneel and adore him.
May God make his face to shine upon us.
To make glorious
To set on fire
To enlighten
That your way, Lord God, may be known
That your way, Lord God, may be known on earth
That your saving power,
Your deliverance,
Your aid,
Your victory,
Your prosperity,
Your salvation, Lord God, may be known among all nations.

Known
Ascertained by seeing
Discerning
Discovering
Acknowledging
Experiencing
Understanding.

Let all the peoples, Lord God, praise you!
May God be gracious to us,
May God be merciful to us
May God cause us to kneel and adore him
May God bless us,
May God make his face to shine upon us.

As you enter contemplation to nurture your soul, covenant with the Lord God. Invite him, plead with him to cut off flattering lips, the tongue that makes great boasts, the deceitful, lying tongue. Beg him to cut them off by the living, active word of God, to cut them off with a wholesome tongue, a soothing tongue that is a tree of life.

By means of his lovingkindness be joined to him, awaken to the old commandment, the word that you heard from the beginning but which is a new commandment because it is now alive and active in you, just as it is alive and active in your savior, the Messiah, Christ Jesus. Make yourself available and pliable to be drawn ever deeper into the Presence of your constant companions, the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of Holy Spirit.

Be silent with a sense of anticipation. It is here in this openness and focused attention and intention where the breath of the Almighty will make you understand that you really are who he says you are in Christ. May you know life. May you become intimately familiar with the soothing tongue that is a tree of life.

Close your eyes. Stay in this position of quiet anticipation for as long as you can.

When ready
Open your eyes
Breathe in
Breathe out

Go, and live as you really are, as the breath of the Almighty in you nurtures and matures the simplicity and singleness of devotion to the Lord God that is in Christ Jesus. Live in wholehearted devotion to the Lord God, through the breath of the Almighty in you, today and every day. Awaken to life through God-centered consciousness, your eyes ever toward the Lord God, your Helper.

Phil 4:23 – The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. (ESV)
