Meditative – To You, O Lord, I Lift Up My Soul

Under the care, protection, guardianship and instruction of your Helper, work out your own health and wholeness.

Words – Thoughts – And Nurturing Our Souls

The sayings of my mouth
And the meditation of my heart
Are powerful
Leading either to separation or unity, to fear or to love, to lies or to truth, to darkness or to light, to death or to life.

When the sayings of our mouth and the meditation of our heart are grounded upon and flow from God’s living Word, they are infused with the healing and life-changing power of Love and Grace and Fellowship.

This meditation is about the path to life. We are ever under the care, protection, guardianship and instruction of our Helper. Yet working out our own health and wholeness is a key component in our journey in recovering spiritual truth, and rediscovering who we really are. It is taken from the Study Blog titled To You, Lord God, I Lift Up my Soul if you’d like to check out the Scripture texts that it’s based on.

My prayer for you is that you will encounter the breath of the Almighty as you experience and contemplate this meditation and that your weary soul will be satisfied, and your languishing soul will be replenished.

But it is the spirit in man, the breath of the Almighty, that makes him understand. Job 32:8 (ESV)

Work out your own salvation.
Work out your own health and wholeness.

How?
I don’t know how!
My soul is in turmoil within me.
I want peace, calm, purpose, fulfillment, health, wholeness
But I don’t know how to get these things.

Work out your own salvation.
Work out your own health and wholeness.

How?
Position yourself
So that the reasonings or your heart may be revealed.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Focus intently on your breath to the exclusion of all else.
For it is the spirit in you,
The breath of the Almighty,
That makes you understand.

I, the Lord God, desire steadfast love and not sacrifice
I, the Lord God, desire the knowledge of God.

Do you know steadfast love?
Do you desire steadfast love?
Do you know the Lord God?
Do you desire to know the Lord God?
What stands in the way of your knowing the Lord God?
What overshadows your desire for the Lord God?
What bars you from knowing, experiencing steadfast love?
What overpowers your desire for steadfast love?

Work out your own salvation.
Work out your own health and wholeness.

Appearing to be alive
But dead.
Dead, just like Adam the day he listened to his wife’s words
Rather than the Lord God’s words which give life.

Dead
While appearing to be alive.
Breathing,
But not knowing the breath of the Almighty
That gives understanding.
Perversion of life
Vanity
Dead, while appearing to be alive
Breathing, but not knowing the breath of the Almighty that is life
This death
Has been passed on from Adam
To you
To everyone.

Work out your own salvation.
Work out your own health and wholeness.

Adam landed us in the dilemma we’re in
First sin
Then death
No one exempt from either sin or death.

Sin
Missing the mark
Heeding the misguided words of one enslaved by self-interest
Forsaking the words of his Helper
Disturbed relations with God.

Death.
This huge abyss separating us from God
Resulting in termination of life.
Dead, while appearing to be alive
Breathing, but not knowing the breath of the Almighty that is life.

Work out your own salvation.
Work out your own health and wholeness.

Adam, who got us into this
Points ahead to the One who will get us out of it.

Spirit can be known only by spirit
God’s Spirit and our spirits in open communion.

Work out your own salvation.
Work out your own health and wholeness.
Position yourself
So that the reasonings of your heart may be revealed.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Lie outstretched.
Place yourself in a passive or horizontal posture (literally or figuratively).
Utterly prostrate.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Focus intently on your breath to the exclusion of all else.
For it is the spirit in you,
The breath of the Almighty,
That makes you understand.

I have calmed and quieted my soul.
You, Lord God, keep in perfect peace the one whose mind is stayed on you because s/he trusts in you.
You, Lord God, wake me up, open my ears to listen as one ready to take orders.

To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.
O my God, in you I trust.
I hasten to you for refuge.
In you, I am confident and assured of support and aid.
I confide in you.
I wait for you, O Lord.
I wait, bound together with you.
I wait, I tarry, I patiently, expectantly wait for you.
No one who waits for you shall be put to shame.
No one who waits for you shall be disappointed.

Work out your own salvation.
Work out your own health and wholeness.
Position yourself
So that the reasonings of your heart may be revealed.

The wantonly treacherous shall be ashamed.
The wantonly
That which is empty, ineffectual, undeserved, worthless
The treacherous
That which is covered with a garment, acts covertly,
Pillages, ravages, spoils,
Dealing deceitfully and unfaithfully
Shall be ashamed
Pale
Disappointed
Delayed.

Sin
Missing the mark
Heeding the misguided words of one enslaved by self-interest
Forsaking the words of your Helper
Disturbed relations with God.

Death.
This huge abyss separating you from God
Resulting in termination of life.
Dead, while appearing to be alive.
Breathing, but not knowing the breath of the Almighty that is life.

Work out your own salvation.
Work out your own health and wholeness.
Position yourself
So that the reasonings of your heart may be revealed.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Focus intently on your breath to the exclusion of all else.
For it is the spirit in you,
The breath of the Almighty,
That makes you understand.
Breathe.
Know the breath of the Almighty that is life.

And when the reasonings of your heart are revealed
When that which is empty, ineffectual, undeserved, worthless is revealed in you
When that which is treacherous, acting covertly, dealing deceitfully and unfaithfully is revealed in you
Most often revealed through suffering and pain as it pillages, ravages, and spoils
Disappoints and delays your discovery and knowing the breath of the Almighty that is life,
Then work out your own salvation
Work out your own health and wholeness.

How?
To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.
To you, O Lord, I lift up my inner self.

Make me to know your ways, O Lord
Teach me your paths, O Lord.
Lead me in your truth, O Lord.
Teach me, for you are the God of my salvation.
For you, O Lord, I wait all the day long.

Remember your mercy, O Lord,
Remember your steadfast love, O Lord,
For they have been from of old
From long before Adam missed the mark
And failed to heed the word of our Helper.
Remember your mercy and your steadfast love, O Lord,
For they have been from of old.

Make me hear, O Lord
Make me hear intelligently, with attention, discernment, understanding
Make me hear of your love in the morning
Because I rely on you.
Make me know, O Lord
Make me ascertain by seeing, by instruction, by awareness, by acquaintance with you
And through familiarity with your word
Make me know the way I should walk
Because I entrust myself to you.
I assign the care of myself to you.
I turn over myself, my soul, to you for safekeeping.
I walk in the light of your presence, O Lord.
I rejoice in your name all day
I am lifted up by your righteousness, O Lord
For you yourself
Are the strength in which I glory.
My power grows by pleasing you.
So, to you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.

Work out your own salvation.
Work out your own health and wholeness.
Position yourself
So that the reasonings of your heart may be revealed.
So that breathing, you will know the breath of the Almighty that is life.

Experience with God is life-changing
Life-changing experience with God is all due to our God’s righteousness
Life-changing experience with God is all due to the intervention of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Grace and peace to you many times over as you deepen in your experience
With God and Jesus, our Master.

Work out your own salvation.
Work out your own health and wholeness.

Everything that goes into a life of pleasing God has been miraculously given to you
By getting to know personally and intimately the One who invited you to God.

Work out your own salvation.
Work out your own health and wholeness.
Get to know,
Personally and intimately,
The One who invited you to God
Our God and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Work out your own salvation.
Work out your own health and wholeness.

How?
To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.
O my God, in you I trust.
I hasten to you for refuge.
In you, I am confident and assured of support and aid.
I confide in you.
I wait for you, O Lord.
I wait, bound together with you.
I wait, I tarry, I patiently, expectantly wait for you.
I assign the care of myself to you.
I turn over myself, my soul, to you for safekeeping.
No one who waits for you shall be put to shame.
No one who waits for you shall be disappointed.

Everything that goes into a life of pleasing God has been miraculously given to you
By getting to know personally and intimately the One who invited you to God.

The best invitation you ever received!
You were also given absolutely terrific promises
Your tickets to participation in the life of God
After
After turning your back, after escaping from a world corrupted by lust, meanly selfish desires.

What are the absolutely terrific promises that are your tickets to participation in the life of God?

I, Lord God, will cleanse you from all your uncleannesses
I, Lord God, will cleanse you from all your idols
I, Lord God, will give you a new heart
A new spirit, I, Lord God, will put within you
I, Lord God, will cause you to walk in my statutes
I, Lord God, will cause you to be careful to obey my rules.

So, if the Lord God gives and does all this for us, what effort is needed from us to live,
What effort is needed from us to live by participating in the life of God?

Work out your own salvation.
Work out your own health and wholeness.
With fear and trembling
For it is God who works in you
It is God who is active, efficient, effectual, fervent, mighty in you
Both to will and to work
For his good pleasure.

Work out your own salvation.
Work out your own health and wholeness.
Position yourself
As a subordinate
Willingly
Placing yourself in a fixed position
A relation of rest, trust, anticipation
To listen attentively
To conform to the authority
Of the One who has miraculously given to you everything that goes into a life of pleasing God.

Work out your own salvation.
Work out your own health and wholeness.
With fear and trembling

Fear
The fear of the Lord
Is a fountain of life
That you may turn away from the snares of death
That you may turn your back,
That you may escape from a world corrupted by lust, desires of self-interest.

The fear of the Lord
Is a source of water, tears, and blood
New birth
Spiritual awakening
So that breathing, you will know the breath of the Almighty that is life.

Said the faithful servant of the Lord:
The Master, God, opened my ears
And I didn’t go back to sleep
I followed orders
I stood there and took it while they beat me
I held steady while they pulled out my beard
I didn’t dodge their insults
I faced them as they spit in my face.
And the Master, God, stays right there and helps me, so I’m not disgraced.

Therefore,
I set my face like flint
Confident
That I’ll never regret this.
My champion is right here.
Let’s take our stand together!

Work out your own salvation.
Work out your own health and wholeness.
Surrender to your champion.
Take your stand together with your Helper.
To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul
I lift up my inner being to you, O Lord.

Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in good health, even as your soul prospers. (3 John 2 – NHEB Messianic)

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Spirit can be known only by spirit
God’s Spirit and your spirit
In open communion.

As you enter contemplation to nurture your soul as you lift up your inner being to the Lord, he will make you know his ways, teach you his paths, guide you in his truth, and save you. Make yourself available and pliable to be drawn ever deeper into the Presence of your constant companions, the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of Holy Spirit.

Be silent with a sense of anticipation. It is here in this openness and focused attention and intention where the breath of the Almighty will make you understand that you really are who he says you are in Christ. Righteous. Right. Faithful. True to the revealed will of God. Cleansed, given a new heart, a new spirit put within you, having a mind confident and at rest, focused on Christ, united with Christ, one Spirit, empowered by taking your stand together with your Helper. Turn over your soul to the Lord God for safekeeping. And your soul will prosper.

Close your eyes. Stay in this position of quiet anticipation for as long as you can.

When ready
Open your eyes
Breathe in
Breathe out

Go, and live as you really are, as the breath of the Almighty in you nurtures and matures the simplicity and singleness of devotion to the Lord God that is in Christ Jesus. Live in wholehearted devotion to the Lord God, through the breath of the Almighty in you, today and every day. Awaken to life through God-centered consciousness, your eyes ever toward the Lord God, your Helper.

2 Tim 4:22 – The Lord be with your spirit. Grace be with you. (ESV)

With this meditation, the following comes to mind:

“When you pray, try to stay beneath your thoughts, neither fighting them nor thinking them. Everything that comes also goes, so don’t take any of it too seriously. Hold yourself at a more profound level, perhaps in your chest, solar plexus, or deep breath, but stay in your body-self somehow. Do not rise to the mind, because the mind is endlessly repetitive commentary. ” — Richard Rohr – Just this
