Meditative – I Have Calmed and Quieted My Soul

Two kinds of fear. One causes us to work to cover and hide ourselves. The other is a fountain of life.

Words – Thoughts – And Nurturing Our Souls

The sayings of my mouth
And the meditation of my heart
Are powerful
Leading either to separation or unity, to fear or to love, to lies or to truth, to darkness or to light, to death or to life.

When the sayings of our mouth and the meditation of our heart are grounded upon and flow from God’s living Word, they are infused with the healing and life-changing power of Love and Grace and Fellowship.

This meditation is about the path to life. Becoming aware of fear and its effect upon us, influencing how we relate to ourselves, others and the Lord God is a key component in our journey in recovering spiritual truth, and rediscovering who we really are. This meditation is taken from the Study Blog titled I Have Calmed and Quieted My Soul if you’d like to check out the Scripture texts that it’s based on.

My prayer for you is that you will encounter the breath of the Almighty as you experience and contemplate this meditation and that your weary soul will be satisfied, and your languishing soul will be replenished.

But it is the spirit in man, the breath of the Almighty, that makes him understand. Job 32:8 (ESV)

Do you regularly focus on your soul’s condition and needs as you do your body’s condition and needs?

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Open yourself to the Word of God
Open the depths of your interior to the breath of the Almighty
To take the cover off what is hidden in your unconscious
That separates, wounds, harms.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
What do the sayings of your mouth and the meditation of your heart reveal about you?
Do you recognize fear behind them?
How does fear affect how you relate to yourself, others, and to the Lord God?
How does fear affect your actions and reactions to everyday interactions?
Do you cover yourself and hide?
Yet at the same time strive to get your needs met to relieve your fear?

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Beguiled. Seduced wholly.
Mind corrupted from the simplicity that is in the Christ.
Mind corrupted from singleness of devotion to the Lord God
Corrupted with conflicting self-interest, filthy, depressingly wretched, meanly selfish garments.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Focus intently on your breath to the exclusion of all else.
For it is the spirit in you,
The breath of the Almighty,
That makes you understand.

Inhale deeply. My soul thirsts.
Exhale deeply. For the living God.
Breathe in. When shall I come?
Breathe out. And appear before God?

Pour out your soul.
Acknowledge and accept reality as it is:
True, I was born guilty.
I was a sinner from the moment my mother conceived me.

A sinner.
A state of being.
A state of existence.
Controlled and dominated
By passions
That attract and hold attention
And distract from singleness of devotion to the Lord God.

A sinner.
A state of being.
A state of existence
Attached to, controlled and dominated by physical senses
Attached to, controlled and dominated by emotions
Attached to, controlled and dominated by rational intellect
Attached to, controlled and dominated by imagination
Forming mental images of what is not actually present.
So that I am unable to experience the Presence of the One who has never and will never leave me.
Beguiled.
Seduced wholly.
Distracted from singleness of devotion to the Lord God.

A sinner.
A state of being.
A state of existence
In illusion and deception.
Mind corrupted
From the simplicity
The singleness and sincerity
Without self-seeking
That is in Christ.

A sinner.
A state of being.
A state of existence
Covered
In fear
Covered
By death
Covered
With the foreskin of ego-centered consciousness.
Born guilty
A sinner from the moment my mother conceived me.

A sinner.
A state of being.
A state of existence.
Afraid.
Naked.
I hide myself.
Childish.
Unwilling to openly acknowledge, feel, confront my condition and desperate need head on.
Fearfully clinging to my attachment to physical senses, emotions, rational intellect, and imagination,
I hide
From the only one who can help me, heal me, set me free, save me from myself, my self-delusion.

Stop!
Listen!

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Spirit can be known only by spirit
God’s Spirit and our spirit
In open communion.

Listen!
Hear the voice of the Lord God calling you by name.
That’s how he always responds to one hiding from him in fear.
He never ceases to call out and search for you!
He always seeks what has been driven away.
Never with the purpose of punishing
But with the purpose of perfecting you
Completing you
In love.
God is love.
His essential nature
Is steadfast love.

There is no fear in love
Perfect, complete love casts out fear.
He first loved us
So that we also may love.

Stop!
Listen!

Hear the voice of the Lord God calling you by name.
You will not hear with your physical ears
But with the ears of your inner person
In your inmost heart.

Spirit can be known only by spirit
God’s Spirit and your spirit
In open communion.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
The Lord God works continually, tirelessly through your life circumstances
To wean you from your attachment to physical senses, emotions, rational intellect, and imagination
To cause you to withdraw, to give up these attachments
To transfer your affections and occupation elsewhere
So that you gradually become accustomed to other food and drink.

Spirit can be known only by spirit
God’s Spirit and your spirit
In open communion.

The One who is high and lifted up
The One who inhabits eternity
The One whose name is Holy
The One who dwells in the high and holy place
Also dwells
With those who are of a contrite and lowly spirit
He dwells with them
To revive their spirit
To revive their heart.
To make alive.
To keep alive.

Those who are of a contrite and lowly spirit cry out with pleas for mercy:
God!
In your grace
Have mercy on me;
God!
In your great compassion
Blot out my crimes.
God!
Wash me completely from my guilt
And cleanse me from my sin.

God!
Have mercy on me,
A sinner.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
There is a fear, an unhealthy, restrictive, crushing, deadly fear
That exists as a natural and inseparable quality in our state of existence,
Our state of being that is attached to, controlled and dominated
By physical senses, emotions, rational intellect, and imagination
Forming mental images of what is not actually present.

And then
There is the fear of the Lord.
The fear of the Lord
Is a fountain
A fountain of life.

The fear of the Lord
Is a fountain of life
Is a source of water, tears, and blood
New birth
Spiritual awakening
Vessel of mercy
Happiness
Wisdom
That one may turn away
Turn away from the snares, a noose for catching animals, a hook for the nose
That one may turn away from the snares of death
The snares of death existing as a natural and inseparable quality in our ego and its passions, in the foreskin of our old nature.

Breathe in.
Breath out.
The fear of the Lord
Is a fountain of life
Is a source of water, tears, and blood
New birth
Spiritual awakening

New birth
Spiritual awakening
A process of being weaned
From self-centered, self-pleasing, self-will consciousness

New birth
Spiritual awakening
A process of being weaned
Detachment from the passions of physical senses, emotions, rational intellect, and imagination
To discover what’s real
To live
To love
To forgive
To receive
To experience
Union.

David, whom God described, “I have found in David the son of Jesse a man after my heart, who will do all my will,” describes his experience with the process of moving from fear, fright, dread, and hiding to the fear of the Lord.

Out of the depths
Out of the profound emptiness and hunger of my soul
I cry to you, O Lord!
O Lord,
Hear my voice!
Let your ears be attentive
To the voice of my pleas for mercy!
If you, O Lord,
Should mark, attend to, take heed, observe
My iniquities, my perversity, my state of attachment to my passions
O Lord, who could stand?
But with you
There is forgiveness, pardon, leniency.
You are merciful, restrained in punishment,
You spare, set free, treat with mercy
That you may be feared, respected, revered.

I wait
I wait for the Lord
My soul waits
In his word I hope
Hope in the Lord!
Wait.
Be patient.
Stay.
Tarry.
Trust.
Wait.
For with the Lord
There is steadfast love
And with him
Is plentiful redemption
Distinction
Deliverance.
He will redeem
From all attachment and control and domination by physical senses, emotions, rational intellect, and imagination.

O Lord, my heart is not lifted up.
My heart is not prideful.
My eyes are not raised too high.
I do not presumptuously promote myself.
I do not occupy myself with things too great and marvelous for me
I do not seek to separate and distinguish myself
To make myself great and wonderful.

But I have calmed and quieted my soul
Composed.
Yielded.
Set.
To lie outstretched literally or figuratively.
To place in a passive or horizontal position.
Utterly prostrate.

I have withdrawn from worldly occupation and entertainment.
I have been weaned.
I am detached from control and domination by my physical senses and emotions.
I am disengaged from my ego-centered consciousness.

I am still. Calm.
I meditate on God’s word
To disengage from deductive, logical reasoning, and imagination.
To detach from forming mental images of what is not actually present.

I am silent.
In silence, I am awakening my mind to God.
Intuition rather than logic
I experience God-centered consciousness.

Spirit can be known only by spirit
God’s Spirit and my spirit
In open communion.

My soul
As a weaned child
Innocent and harmless
No ill designs against anyone
Humble
Meek
Lowly
No aspiring and ambitious views.
Weaned from the world.
Weaned from the riches, honors, pleasures and profits of the world.
Weaned from nature.
Weaned from self.
Weaned from my own righteousness.
Weaned from all dependence on these things.
Wholly dependent on God for sustenance
Wholly dependent upon God’s providence, grace, and strength
His provision
His skill and wisdom in management
His benevolent care and guidance.
I have no covetous desires to get or build my personal kingdom
Instead, willing to wait the due time for the enjoyment of God’s Kingdom and all its benefits.
My soul waits for the Lord
To bind together, collect, expect.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
The Lord of hosts
Will make for all peoples
A feast of rich food
A feast of well-aged wine.
He will swallow up
The covering that is cast over all peoples
He will swallow up
Fear that makes them hide
He will swallow up
Death
Stripping away the old nature’s control over the body
Uniting us together
With Christ the Messiah.
Eat his flesh
Drink his blood
A feast of rich food
A feast of well-aged wine
And you have life in you.
Eternal life.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
He will swallow up death forever
The Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces
It will be said on that day,
“Behold, this is our God; we have waited for him, that he might save us.”
This is the Lord; we have waited for him;”
“Let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.”

Fear.
Which fear are you intimately familiar with?
Which fear motivates and drives you?

Under the influence and control of physical senses, emotions, rational intellect and imagination,
Afraid
Because
I am naked
I hide myself
From the presence of the Lord God.
Words
Thoughts
Meditations
Mind
Will
Motives
Emotions
Exposed.
The reasonings of my heart
Revealed.
The cover taken off
I hide myself
From the presence of the Lord God.

Or are you familiar with the fear of the Lord?
The fear of the Lord
Is a fountain
A fountain of life.

A fountain
A source
The origin
Of life.

The fear of the Lord
Is a fountain of life.

Are you aware of a thirst deep in your soul for the fountain of life?
Do you keep striving for satisfaction under the influence and control of your physical senses, emotions, rational intellect and imagination?
Or, like David, have you discovered that the fear of the Lord, the fountain of life, is a gift?
A gift that is received
As you are weaned
Detached from your ego-centric consciousness
As you become still
As you patiently wait in silence,
And your soul cries out
God!
In your grace
Have mercy on me.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
God is spirit
Those who fear him
Those who worship him
Must worship in spirit and truth.

The fear of the Lord
Is a fountain of life.

A fountain
A gift
The source
The origin
The Spirit
The truth
Hidden in the depth of your soul.

Have you discovered the fear of the Lord?
That is a fountain of life?
Can you hear it?
Can you see it?
Can you smell it?
Can you feel it?
Have you tasted it?
Or is the fountain of life, the fear of the Lord in you, still hidden and unknown to you?

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
The fear of the Lord
Is a fountain of life.
It is a gift.
Ask the Lord God for a drink.
Wait.
Wait patiently.
Stay.
Tarry.
Trust.
Wait in silence.
Remain in one place
In the presence of the Lord God
In a fixed position
Established.
Lasting.
Continuing.
Certain.
In the presence of the Lord God.
Wait
For God alone.
He will save you.
You will be glad
And you will rejoice in his salvation.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Spirit can be known only by spirit
God’s Spirit and your spirit
In open communion.

As you enter contemplation to nurture your soul and discover that the fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, allow yourself to be drawn deeper into the Presence of your constant companions, the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of Holy Spirit.

Be silent with a sense of anticipation. It is here in this openness and focused attention and intention where the breath of the Almighty will make you understand that you really are who he says you are in Christ. Being knit together in love, in touch with everything there is to know of God, having a mind confident and at rest, focused on Christ, united with Christ, very willing to wait, to learn to worship in spirit and truth.

Close your eyes. Stay in this position of quiet anticipation for as long as you can.

When ready
Open your eyes
Breathe in
Breathe out

Go, and live as you really are, as the breath of the Almighty in you nurtures and matures the simplicity and singleness of devotion to the Lord God that is in Christ Jesus. Live in wholehearted devotion to the Lord God, through the breath of the Almighty in you, today and every day. Awaken to life through God-centered consciousness.

2 Tim 4:22 – The Lord be with your spirit. Grace be with you. (ESV)
