Meditative – Chosen Before the Foundation of the World

Having life in us is the result of the Lord God’s continuous action. Our work is to believe in his work.

Words – Thoughts – And Nurturing Our Souls

The sayings of my mouth
And the meditation of my heart
Are powerful
Leading either to fear or to love, to lies or to truth, to darkness or to light, to death or to life.

When the sayings of our mouth and the meditation of our heart are grounded upon and flow from God’s living Word, they are infused with the healing and life-changing power of Love and Grace and Fellowship.

This meditation is about the path to life. Having life in us, being holy and blameless before the Lord God is the result of his continuous action, his moment by moment persistence in bringing about our reunion with him and our reliance upon him and his work. Our work is to believe in his work. This is our journey in recovering spiritual truth. It is taken from the Study Blog titled Chosen Before the Foundation of the World if you’d like to check out the Scripture texts that it’s based on.

My prayer for you is that you will encounter the breath of the Almighty as you experience and contemplate this meditation and that your weary soul will be satisfied, and your languishing soul will be replenished.

But it is the spirit in man, the breath of the Almighty, that makes him understand. Job 32:8 (ESV)

Do you regularly focus on your soul’s condition and needs as you do your body’s condition and needs?

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

Seek your interior, quiet place
Where the Spirit of the Lord God dwells within you.
In solitude and stillness of body, mind, emotions
Seek the presence of your constant companions, Grace, Love, Fellowship.
Allow the deepest longings in the core or your being to be drawn out and tended to.

Inhale deeply. My soul thirsts.
Exhale deeply. For the living God.
Breathe in. When shall I come?
Breathe out. And appear before God?

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

Rest here
In the presence of your companions.
Wait here
For your soul to be nourished and satisfied.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

Who am I?
Who am I, really?

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

God,
In your grace
Have mercy on me;
God,
In your great compassion
Blot out my crimes.
God,
Wash me completely from my guilt
And cleanse me from my sin.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

For I know my crimes
My sin confronts me all the time.
Against you, you only,
Have I sinned and done what is evil from your perspective;
So that you are right, Lord God
You are right in accusing me
You are justified in passing sentence
For I am out of step with you.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

True
I was born guilty
I was a sinner from the moment my mother conceived me.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

Still,
You, God,
Want truth in the inner person;
So, make me know
Make me know wisdom.
God,
Make me know wisdom in my inmost heart.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

Who am I?
Am I merely human?

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

Merely human.
Are you constantly aware of your failures?
Are you consistently confronted with accusations of not being enough, not measuring up?
Do you fear condemnation and so withdraw, repressing parts of yourself, body, thoughts, emotions, actions?
Do you feel separate?
Disconnected? Disengaged? Dismissed?
Are you held captive in darkness and negativity?
Through fear. Anger. Grief. Vengefulness. Pride. Envy. Jealousy. Greed. Selfishness. Lust. Confusion. Inner anguish.
Do you refuse to expose these things and face your pain?
Do you resist letting go and owning your truth?
“I was a sinner from the moment my mother conceived me.”
Do you fear God’s accusations?
Do you fear God’s judgment?
Do you fear death?
Death, as the facades you’ve carefully built crumble around you.
Facades like self-righteousness that have become a belief system that no longer works or satisfies
Facades like philosophy,
Empty deceit,
Human tradition which accords with the elemental spirits of the world
But is not in agreement with the Messiah.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

Who am I?
Am I merely human?

True
I was born guilty
I was a sinner from the moment my mother conceived me.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

But who am I, really?
The inner person?
My inmost heart?
Do I know?
How can I know?

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

Focus intently on your breath to the exclusion of all else.
For it is the spirit in you,
The breath of the Almighty,
That makes you understand.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

Made in the image of God
After his likeness
Yet made complete, accomplished, consummated in character through suffering.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

Have this mind
Which is yours in Christ Jesus.
Though he was in the form of God
He did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped
But made himself nothing
Taking the form of a servant.
Being born in the likeness of men
He humbled himself
By becoming obedient to the point of death.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

Have this mind
Which is yours in Christ Jesus.
Christ Jesus,
Serving as a means or agency
In the middle
Constructively
Formative
Positive.
In Christ.
A fixed position in place, time, state
A fixed position

Mediation
Intervention
Reconciliation
A relation of rest.
Take a moment to bask in your fixed position in Christ Jesus.
Enjoy the warm, pleasant feeling that being in this environment and situation creates.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

Luxuriate in your relation of rest in Christ Jesus.
Lie outstretched, literally or figuratively.
Place yourself in a passive posture, utterly prostrate.
Identify with the founder of your salvation,
Your deliverer and protector and mediator.
The Lord Jesus Christ demonstrated how to become completely, wholesomely human!
“As the living Father sent me, I live because of the Father.”

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

Using his own human body, Christ Jesus acted out in the flesh what we need to do internally, in the spirit.
Human.
And divine.
Have this mind
Which is yours in Christ Jesus
In a fixed relation of rest.

In Christ
Of one mind
Set at one again.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

For in Jesus the Messiah
Bodily
Lives the fullness of all that God is
And it is in union with him that you have been made full.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

Also, it was in union with him that you were circumcised
Circumcised by the Messiah
Accomplished by stripping away the old nature’s control over the body.
In this circumcision, you were buried along with the Messiah by being immersed.
And in union with him, you were also raised up along with him
By God’s faithfulness that worked when he raised Jesus from the dead.
You were dead because of your sins,
Because of your foreskin, your old nature,
A sinner from the moment your mother conceived you.
But God made you alive
Along with the Messiah
By forgiving all your sins.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

You, God,
Want truth in the inner person;
So, make me know
Make me know wisdom.
God,
Make me know wisdom in my inmost heart.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

Christ the Messiah said:
I am the living bread that came down from heaven.
The bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.
Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood,
You have no life in you.
Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life.
For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.
Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood
Abides in me, and I in him.
Abides
Stays
Continues in a given place, state, relation or expectancy.
As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father,
So whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

Because of me
You will live
As you eat my flesh and drink my blood.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

How can this man give us his flesh to eat?
The unspiritual self, just as it is by nature,
Cannot receive the gifts of God’s Spirit.
Spirit can be known only by spirit
God’s Spirit and our spirits
In open communion.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

God,
Make me know wisdom in my inmost heart!
Wisdom
Wisdom has prepared her meat.
She has mixed her wine.
She has also set her table.
She has sent out her maidens.
She cries, “Whoever is simple, seducible, let them turn in here!”
As for those who are void of understanding, Wisdom says,
“Come, eat some of my bread,
Drink some of the wine which I have mixed.
Leave your simple ways, and live.
Walk in the way of understanding.”

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

Spirit can be known only by spirit
God’s Spirit and our spirits
In open communion.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.
When many of Christ’s disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?”
And Christ replied:
Do you take offense at this?
Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before?
Death. The flesh put to death. Followed by resurrection. Ascension.
It is the Spirit who gives life.
The flesh is of no avail.
The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

Focus intently on your breath to the exclusion of all else.
For it is the spirit in you,
The breath of the Almighty,
That makes you understand.
Have faith in the Spirit which is unseen
Rather than in externals that are seen.
Have faith in the Spirit which directs all of life
Have faith in the enduring, permanent presence of Christ.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

Eat.
Devour.
Consume.
Gnaw.
Chew.
The words
That Jesus Christ has spoken to you
Words that are Spirit and life.
A slow process.
Metaphorical.
Habit of spiritually feeding upon Christ.
Constant custom of eating in company with Grace, Love, Fellowship.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

Listen!
Hear!
Wisdom says:
“Come, eat some of my bread,
Drink some of the wine which I have mixed.
Leave your simple ways, and live.
Walk in the way of understanding.”

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

It is the spirit in man
The breath of the Almighty
That makes him understand.
Through the spirit in you
Through the breath of the Almighty in you
Respond to Wisdom’s invitation.
Come eat.
Come drink.
Be joined together in love.
Be joined
Be knit
Together
By reduplication.
Eat the flesh of Christ
Drink the blood of Christ
For the flesh of Christ and the blood of Christ
Become your soul.
You become an exact copy
A reproduction
A counterpart
A double
Made in the image and likeness of God.
You live
Because of Christ Jesus.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

Receive
Receive near
Associate yourself with Christ
In familiar, intimate relation
Learn from him.
Eat his flesh.
Drink his blood.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

Adored and thanked be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!
He has
He has blessed us
In Christ
With every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places.
The Lord God chose us in Christ Jesus
He chose us in him
Before
Before the foundation of the world
That we should be
That we should be holy and blameless before him.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

The Lord God chose us in Christ Jesus
That we should be
That we should be holy and blameless before him.
Should be
Not as in obligation
Not as in duty
Not as in propriety
Not as in desirability
Not as in expectation
Not as in a future condition.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

The Lord God chose us in Christ Jesus
That we should be
That we should be holy and blameless before him.
Should be
As in “to be”
As in “I exist”
As in “I am”
In this present moment
I exist
I am
Holy and blameless before him!

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

The Lord God chose me in Christ Jesus
That I should be
That I should be holy and blameless before him.
Should be
Reality
I am
I exist
In this present moment
Holy and blameless before him
Because
The Lord God’s action is continuous.
The Lord God’s action is in progress.
The Lord God’s action is a state of persistence.
The Lord God’s action is taking place in the present time
Whether I am aware of it or not.
Whether I resist or surrender and participate.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

God’s continuous action:
Redemption.
Forgiveness.
Making known to me the mystery of his will.
A plan for the fullness of time.
To unite
To unite all things in Christ Jesus.
According to the riches of his grace,
Which he lavished upon me, and you, and everyone, and every thing.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

In Christ
Of one mind
Set at one again.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

Open yourself to the Word of God.
Open the depths of your interior to the breath of the Almighty.
For it is the spirit in you,
The breath of the Almighty,
That makes you understand.

Expectantly wait
For a satisfying relationship with the Spirit.
For in Christ,
Neither your most conscientious religion
Nor disregard of religion amounts to anything.
What matters
Is something far more interior:
Reliance upon Christ
Expressed in love
Through his grace,
Through divine influence upon your heart, and its reflection in your life, including gratitude.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

Christ the Messiah says, “Eat my flesh. Drink my blood.”

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

Respond, “I eat God’s flesh and drink his blood.”
As I eat, the Messiah brings me into a specified condition through grace lavished upon me.
In Christ
Of one mind
Set at one again.

As you enter contemplation shut the door to your room, your place of quiet, rest, and solitude. This is your soul’s time. Leave everything else outside, on the other side of the door.

Open yourself to the Presence of your companions. Sense your soul being drawn into the inner circle of friendship, to participate in intimate relationship with the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of Holy Spirit. Let them nurture your soul as they lead you into ever closer union with them.

Rest.
Wait.
Be still.
Open wide the depths of your interior to the breath of the Almighty
To nurture your soul as you wordlessly confide in him
As he searches your heart
As the Spirit intercedes for you
According to the will of God
With groanings too deep for words.

It is in union with the Lord Jesus Christ, Messiah that you have been made full. Expectantly wait to encounter and experience this fullness, for a satisfying relationship with the Spirit.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

Be silent with a sense of anticipation. It is here in this openness and focused attention where the breath of the Almighty will make you understand that you really are who he says you are in Christ, alive in the Spirit, abiding in the love of Christ Jesus.

Close your eyes. Stay in this position of quiet anticipation for as long as you can.

When ready
Open your eyes
Breathe in
Breathe out

Go, and live as you really are, holy and blameless before the Lord God, as the breath of the Almighty in you nurtures and matures the simplicity and singleness of devotion to the Lord God that is in Christ Jesus and reduplicated in you. Live in wholehearted devotion and reliance upon the Lord God, through the breath of the Almighty in you, abiding in Christ, controlled by the love of Christ today and every day.

2 Tim 4:22 – The Lord be with your spirit. Grace be with you. (ESV)

  1. This is a great meditation. The following quote from Richard Rohr’s book – ‘Just This’ may help you go a little deeper as you use this meditation.

“To let the moment teach us, we must allow ourselves to be at least slightly stunned by it until it draws us inward and upward, toward a subtle experience of wonder.”

As you meditate – be stunned by the moment.
