Meditative – The Simplicity That Is In Christ

Words – Thoughts – And Nurturing Our Souls

The sayings of my mouth
And the meditation of my heart
Are powerful
Leading either to lies or to truth, to darkness or to light, to death or to life.

When the sayings of our mouth and the meditation of our heart are grounded upon and flow from God’s living Word, they are infused with the healing and life-changing power of Love and Grace and Fellowship.
This meditation is about recognizing and admitting that we’ve been beguiled, seduced and finding our way back to the power and freedom of the simplicity and singleness of devotion to the Lord God. This is part of our journey in recovering spiritual truth. It is taken from the Study Blog titled The Simplicity That Is In Christ if you’d like to check out the Scripture texts that it’s based on.

My prayer for you is that you will encounter the breath of the Almighty as you experience and contemplate this meditation and that your weary soul will be satisfied, and your languishing soul will be replenished.

But it is the spirit in man, the breath of the Almighty, that makes him understand. Job 32:8 (ESV)

Do you regularly focus on your soul’s condition and needs as you do your body’s condition and needs?

Find a room or place where you can be alone, uninterrupted, and quiet for a bit.
Find a comfortable place and position to sit.
Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Consciously relax each muscle, one at a time, from the tips of your toes to the top of your head
Setting each one free from tension and discomfort as best as you can

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Note your thoughts, desires, memories, emotions as they present themselves.
They may be indications of deeper soul issues
But for now, set each one free
Free yourself of them
Confident that the Lord God will return them if there’s something you need to do with them

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Open yourself to the Word of God
Open the depths of your interior to the breath of the Almighty

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Focus intently on your breath to the exclusion of all else.
For it is the spirit in you,
The breath of the Almighty,
That makes you understand.

Inhale deeply. My soul thirsts.
Exhale deeply. For the living God.
Breathe in. When shall I come?
Breathe out. And appear before God?

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Become aware of your interior.
How does your soul’s thirst manifest itself? Turmoil? Making a loud, confused, droning sound? Raging? Moaning? Agitation?

Breathe in. Who is my enemy?
Breathe out. Who is my hating adversary?
Breathe in. Is it the devil?
Breathe out. Have I been captured by him to do his will?

Breathe in. Who is my enemy?
Breathe out. Who is my hating adversary?
Breathe in. Is it the vessel that the Lord God made
Breathe out. For dishonorable use?

Breathe in. Who is my enemy?
Breathe out. Who is my hating adversary?
Breathe in. Is it simply that I am lacking knowledge of the truth?
Breathe out. Am I out of step with reality?

Breathe in. Am I grasping after wind, after emptiness?
Breathe out. Have I been seduced by delusion?
Breathe in. What is the cause of my oppression?
Breathe out. This state of being weighed down with worries, problems, distress, failure, longing.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Pour out your soul.
Spill it. Let the noisiness all drain out.
Through words of complaint to the Lord God.
Through tears. Through panting breath. Through groaning.

Breathe in. Unaware.
Breathe out. Ignorantly.
Breathe in. I readily put up with
Breathe out. A different word
Breathe in. A different spirit
Breathe out. Than the One in whose image I was made.
Breathe in. A different spirit
Breathe out. Than the One in whose likeness I was made.
Breathe in. I have been
Breathe out. Beguiled.

Breathe in. I have been seduced.
Breathe out. Seduced wholly.
Breathe in. Persuaded to do something disloyal.
Breathe out. Delusion
Breathe in. The point where disloyal action proceeds.
Breathe out. I have been deluded.
Breathe in. I have been misled.
Breathe out. Cheated.
Breathe in. False belief.
Breathe out. Misunderstanding.
Breathe in. My mind ruined by moral influences.
Breathe out. Divided devotion
Breathe in. Between the Lord God and
Breathe out. My own self-seeking, self-interest.
Breathe in. I notice every injury.
Breathe out. I spot each insult.
Breathe in. I hold grudges.
Breathe out. And I plot retribution.
Breathe in. Contrary to the thoughts and ways
Breathe out. Of the One in whose image I was made.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Pour out your soul.
Until you are free.
Open wide to receive the Word of the Lord God.
Open fully to the breath of the Almighty.
Open eagerly to the Presence of the Lord God.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Remember.
Hold the Lord God with affection and tenderness in your mind.
For his steadfast love endures forever.
For he is right in all his ways and kind in all his works.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Open yourself to the Word of God
Open the depths of your interior to the breath of the Almighty

Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners from the Lord God’s displeasure with sin
Displeasure with our seduction, our being conned and persuaded to be disloyal to him;
Displeasure with our delusion, our erroneously looking elsewhere for knowledge and satisfaction.
Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners from the Lord God’s displeasure with sin
To save
To deliver both you and me.
To set all free.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Christ Jesus came into the world
To save each and every one
Who has missed the mark and erred morally by being deceived
Who has no soundness, no health in her/his basic physical matter
Who is oppressed by the enemy, the hating adversary, with worry, fear, distress.
Who has wandered away from truth, life, love, and intimate connection.
Whose devotion to the Lord God is corrupted by self-interest.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners from the Lord God’s displeasure with sin

Therefore, you receive mercy
You do! We all do!
We receive mercy

That Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience,
His longsuffering, his long enduring temper.

The Lord God desiring to show his wrath and make known his power
The Lord God has endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction
In order to make known the riches of his glory for vessels of mercy
Which he has prepared beforehand for glory.

In mercy
He displays his perfect patience

He calls you through your oppression
He calls you through the turmoil in your soul
He calls you through your troubles and suffering

In mercy
The Lord God calls you through your awareness that you can’t save yourself

In mercy
In perfect patience

That’s how the Lord God shows his wrath
And makes known his power
To accomplish his purpose for you.

Jesus Christ
Crucified
That your faith might rest
In the power of God.

“I exist”
In the power of God!

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Open yourself to the Word of God
Open the depths of your interior to the breath of the Almighty

Wisdom
The Lord Jesus Christ.
Lie outstretched literally or figuratively
Utterly prostrate.

Wisdom
Among the mature.
It is not a wisdom of this age
It is not a wisdom of the rulers of this age
It is a secret and hidden wisdom of God

What God has prepared for those who love him
God has revealed to us through the Spirit
No one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God
We have received the Spirit who is from God
That we might understand the things freely given us by God

Wisdom
Among the mature.
Taught by the Spirit
Interpreting spiritual truths
To those who are spiritual

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Focus intently on your breath to the exclusion of all else.
For it is the spirit in you
The breath of the Almighty
That makes you understand.

Utterly prostrate
Let yourself be drawn back to the simplicity of devotion to the Lord God that is in Christ Jesus.

Breathe in. You are my God!
Breathe out. Teach me
Breathe in. Teach me to do your will.
Breathe out. You are my God!
Breathe in. Let your good Spirit
Breathe out. Lead me
Breathe in. Lead me on level ground!
Breathe out. You are my God!
Breathe in. For your names’ sake, O Lord,
Breathe out. Preserve my life!

Breathe in. You are my God!
Breathe out. I am your servant!
Breathe in. In your righteousness
Breathe out. Bring my soul
Breathe in. Bring my soul out of trouble!
Breathe out. You are my God!
Breathe in. I am your servant!
Breathe out. In your steadfast love
Breathe in. You will
Breathe out. You will cut off my enemies
Breathe in. You are my God!
Breathe out. I am your servant!

Breathe in. And in your steadfast love
Breathe out. You will
Breathe in. You will destroy all
Breathe out. You will destroy all the adversaries
Breathe in. Of my soul
Breathe out. For I am
Breathe in. Your servant
Breathe out. You are
Breathe in. My God
Breathe out. You are my God!

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Focus intently on your breath to the exclusion of all else.
For it is the spirit in you,
The breath of the Almighty,
That makes you understand.

Breathe in. I rest. “I exist.”
Breathe out. In the power of God

Wait.
Be still.
Open wide the depths of your interior to the breath of the Almighty
To nurture your soul as you wordlessly confide in him
As he searches your heart
As the Spirit intercedes for you
According to the will of God
With groanings too deep for words.

Utterly prostrate.
Experience the power and freedom of simplicity and singleness of devotion to the Lord God.

As you enter contemplation shut the door to your room. This is your soul’s time. Leave everything else outside, on the other side of the door.

Open yourself wide open, the depths of your interior, to the Presence of your companions, Grace, Love, Fellowship to nurture your soul.

Breathe in
Breathe out

Be silent with a sense of anticipation. It is here in this openness and focused attention where the breath of the Almighty will make you understand that you really are who he says you are in Christ. He delights in you.

Sense your soul being drawn into the inner circle of friendship, to participate in intimate relationship with the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of Holy Spirit.

Close your eyes. Stay in this position of quiet anticipation for as long as you can.

When ready
Open your eyes
Breathe in
Breathe out

Go, and live as you really are, as the breath of the Almighty in you nurtures and matures the simplicity and singleness of devotion to the Lord God that is in Christ Jesus. Live in wholehearted devotion to the Lord God, through the breath of the Almighty in you, today and every day.

2 Tim 4:22 – The Lord be with your spirit. Grace be with you. (ESV)
