Meditative – As You Really Are

Words – Thoughts – And Nurturing Our Souls

The sayings of my mouth
And the meditation of my heart
Are powerful
Leading either to lies or to truth, to darkness or to light, to death or to life.

When the sayings of our mouth and the meditation of our heart are grounded upon and flow from God’s living Word, they are infused with the healing and life-changing power of Love and Grace and Fellowship.

This meditation is about being willing to become revealed, bare, tested as genuine. No longer concealed or unwittingly hidden in the bondage of self-will but set free to live conformed to the revealed will of God. This is part of our journey in recovering spiritual truth. It is taken from the Study Blog titled As You Really Are if you’d like to check out the Scripture texts that it’s based on.

My prayer for you is that you will encounter the breath of the Almighty as you experience and contemplate this meditation and that your weary soul will be satisfied, and your languishing soul will be replenished.

But it is the spirit in man, the breath of the Almighty, that makes him understand. Job 32:8 (ESV)

I encourage you to find ways to become aware of Holy Spirit and to relinquish your time, your thoughts, your energy, your ways to Holy Spirit’s convicting, enlightening, restorative ministrations.

A way that works for me is what I call meditative study that leads to contemplation which nurtures the deep, interior part of me. I invite you to try it.

Do you regularly focus on your soul’s condition and needs as you do your body’s condition and needs?

Find a room or place where you can be alone, uninterrupted, and quiet for a bit.
Find a comfortable place and position to sit.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Consciously relax each muscle
Setting each one free from tension and discomfort as best as you can

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Note your thoughts, desires, memories, emotions as they present themselves
They may be indications of deeper soul issues
But for now, set each one free
Confident that the Lord God will return them if there’s something you need to do with them

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Open yourself
Open yourself wide
Open yourself to the Word of God
Open the depths of your interior to the breath of the Almighty
Become aware of how opening yourself feels.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Focus intently on your breath to the exclusion of all else.
For it is the spirit in you,
The breath of the Almighty,
That makes you understand.

Inhale deeply. My soul thirsts.
Exhale deeply. For the living God.
Breathe in. When shall I come?
Breathe out. And appear before God?

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Become aware of your interior.
How does your soul’s thirst manifest itself?
Turmoil? Snarling, roaring, growling disquiet in your heart?
Making a loud, confused, droning sound?
Raging? Moaning? Agitation?

David, the man chosen to be king over the Hebrews, whom God described, “I have found in David the son of Jesse a man after my heart, who will do all my will,” expressed the turmoil in his soul with these words:

Your arrows, Lord God, have sunk into me. They press. They lead down.
Your hand has come down on me
There is no soundness (no wholesomeness) in my flesh (my body, my person)
There is no health (no peace) in my bones, my substance, my basic physical matter
I am utterly bowed down (I do amiss, I am perverse) and prostrate.
All the day I go about mourning (in sackcloth)
Distressed, burdened, grieving in dirty, filthy, depressingly wretched, meanly selfish garments

My sides (loins, the region of strength and procreative power)
Are filled with burning (full of drought, shrinkage)
I am feeble (sluggish, faint) and crushed (collapsed)
I groan because of the tumult (snarling, roaring, growling, disquiet) of my heart
Like a heavy burden, my iniquities have gone over my head.
They are too heavy for me.
My wounds stink (are morally offensive)
My wounds fester because of my foolishness (silliness, to be perverse).
My heart throbs, pants. My strength (vigor, power) fails me.
The light (illumination, happiness) of my eyes also has gone from me.
I was born guilty
I was a sinner from the moment my mother conceived me.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Open the depths of your interior to the Word of God
Open the depths of your interior to the breath of the Almighty
Open the depths of your soul to the Presence of your companions, Grace, Love, Fellowship
Let your soul pour out it’s grief and pain
Its longing to shed the burdensome, dirty, filthy, depressingly wretched, meanly selfish garments
The fear of being totally uncovered and exposed

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Acknowledge the condition and state of your body, mind and soul.
Distressed. Burdened with a load too heavy for you.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Don’t judge or fight the condition and state of your body, mind and soul.
Simply agree that it is what it is.

The prophet Jeremiah states:
I know, O Lord, that the way of man is not in his control
We are not able
To direct our steps
We don’t have what it takes to take charge of life.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Notice how your mind and body and soul respond to this truth.

The Lord God observes:
You hate discipline, correction and restraint
You throw my words behind you
“How long shall my honor be turned into shame?”
To wound. Disgrace. Confuse. Taunt. Insult.
“How long will you love vain words?”
Empty, worthless words without purpose.
“How long will you seek after lies?”
Searching, striving in worship or prayer after lies. Idolatry.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Observe your response to the Lord God’s words. Surprise? Denial? Defensiveness? Agreement?

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Pour out your soul.
Spill it. Let the noisiness all drain out.
Through words of complaint to the Lord God.
Through tears. Through panting breath. Through groaning.

Pour out your soul.
Until you are free.
Open to the breath of the Almighty.
Open to the Presence of the Lord God.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Remember.
Hold the Lord God with affection and tenderness in your mind.
For his steadfast love endures forever.

See yourself, your body
Lying prostrate. In a passive posture.
Mirror the Lord Jesus Christ.
Identify with the Lord Jesus Christ.
Set. To lie outstretched.
In a passive position.
Let the breath of the Almighty nurture your soul as you lie at rest.

Breath in.
Breathe out.
Hear the Lord Jesus Christ inviting you
“Come to me”
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden”
“Come to me”
“And I will give you rest.”

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

The Lord has made everything for its purpose, for himself
Even the wicked for the day of trouble
Even you for the day of trouble
Everyone who is arrogant
Questioning the Lord God’s character and thoughts and ways
Is abhorrent to him.
Be assured
You will not go unpunished.
Observe your response to the Lord God’s words.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Open yourself to the Word of God
Open the depths of your interior to the breath of the Almighty

Receive the Lord God’s punishment:
By steadfast love
Mercy, kindness
By faithfulness
Truth, stability, certainty, trustworthiness

By steadfast love and faithfulness
Iniquity, moral perversity, arrogance
Is atoned for
Is purged.
Making reconciliation.
Removing the dirty, filthy, depressingly wretched, meanly selfish garment
That separates you from the Lord God.

This is your way back home
To truth and life and love and intimate connection.

The Lord God is the source of your life
In Christ Jesus
Fixed position in place, time, or state
In Christ Jesus
He is instrumental, serving as the means to bringing about the purpose of the Lord God for you
The Lord God made Christ Jesus your wisdom
He is your insight into the true nature of things
The Lord God made Christ Jesus your righteousness
He is your rightwiseness. The character or quality of being right or just. He conforms you to the revealed will of God.
The Lord God made Christ Jesus your sanctification
He is your purification
The Lord God made Christ Jesus your redemption
He is your release you from the bondage of self-will, from your vain manner of life, by paying a ransom price; by delivering you from the guilt and power of sin

In Christ Jesus
He is instrumental, serving as the means to bringing about the purpose of the Lord God for you
Cleansing you from malice, badness, depravity, hurtful in effect or influence, trouble, worthless in essential character, degeneracy from original virtue.
Cleansing your dirty, filthy, depressingly wretched, meanly selfish garments
Purged.
Covered. With mercy.
Making amends and reparation for wrongdoing and guilt.
Paying the penalty for wrongdoing and guilt.
Cleansed.
Forgiven. Pardoned.
Reconciled.
This is who you really are.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
The Lord God is the source of your life
In Christ Jesus
Rest in Christ Jesus
Fixed position in place, time, state

You really are unleavened!
You really are uncorrupted!
You really are revealed.
You really are uncovered.
You really are disclosed.

For Christ, our Passover lamb
Has been sacrificed
Let us therefore celebrate
With the unleavened bread
Christ Jesus
Sincerity
Purity
Tested as genuine
Truth
No longer concealed

The words of the Lord
Are pure words
Like silver refined in a furnace
Purified seven times.
The word of the Lord proves true

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Take refuge in the Lord God
Be confident and sure of him
Confide in him
Rely upon him
Your security

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Focus intently on your breath to the exclusion of all else.
For it is the spirit in you
The breath of the Almighty
That makes you understand.

Rest.
Wait.
Be still.
Be without movement.
Let thoughts and emotions come and go as they will.
Open wide the depths of your interior to the breath of the Almighty.
To nurture your soul as you wordlessly confide in him.

As you enter contemplation shut the door to your room. This is your soul’s time. Leave everything else outside, on the other side of the door.

Open yourself, your interior, wide open to the Presence of your companions, Grace, Love, Fellowship.

It may feel like you’re entering a dark chasm.
Focus on your breath.
Open to the breath of the Almighty.
Allow yourself to descend into the darkness.
Feel your interior open further

Breathe in
Breathe out
You may feel like you bump up against something that hinders your descent
Or you may feel like you get tangled up in something that confines you

Breathe in
Breathe out
The Lord God is inviting you to release things to him
Things that are hidden in the deep recesses of your unconscious
Things that you’re unaware of
That influence your behavior stealthily
Things repressed
Things that distort reality
Open those deep recesses to the breath of the Almighty

By steadfast love
Mercy, kindness
By faithfulness
Truth, stability, certainty, trustworthiness
By steadfast love and faithfulness
Iniquity, moral perversity, arrogance, fear, self-interest
Is atoned for
Is purged.
Making reconciliation.
Removing the dirty, filthy, depressingly wretched, meanly selfish garment
That separates you from the Lord God.

Breathe in
Breathe out
You may feel a gentle current of movement
In and around you
As if from a sigh of breath
Or from the wings of a hovering bird

Allow yourself to be drawn deeper into the Presence of the Lord God
Rest
As he searches your interior depths
As the Spirit intercedes for you
According to the will of God
With groanings too deep for words
Remain open to the Presence of your companions, Grace, Love, Fellowship.

Breathe in
Breathe out
Focus intently on your breath to the exclusion of all else.
For it is the spirit in you
The breath of the Almighty
That makes you understand.
By the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body
Selfishness, deceitful desires, what is earthly
To be renewed in the spirit of your mind.

Be silent with a sense of anticipation. It is here in this openness and focused attention where the breath of the Almighty will make you understand that you really are who he says you are in Christ.

Sense your soul being drawn into the inner circle of friendship, to participate in intimate relationship with the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of Holy Spirit.

Close your eyes. Stay in this position of quiet anticipation for as long as you can.

When ready
Open your eyes
Breathe in
Breathe out

Go, and live as you really are, revealed, bare, tested as genuine, no longer concealed or unwittingly hidden in the vain manner of life of the bondage of self-will, but set free to live conformed to the revealed will of God by the breath of the Almighty in you.

2 Tim 4:22 – The Lord be with your spirit. Grace be with you. (ESV)
