Meditative – Falling and Rising Again

Words – Thoughts – And Nurturing Our Souls

The sayings of my mouth
And the meditation of my heart
Are powerful
Leading either to lies or to truth, to darkness or to light, to death or to life.

This meditation is about finding a path to embrace opposition, misunderstanding, contradiction, and rejection for they are a necessary piece in our journey to recovering spiritual truth. It is taken from the Study Blog titled Falling and Rising Again if you’d like to check out the Scripture texts that it’s based on.

My prayer for you is that you will encounter the breath of the Almighty as you experience and contemplate this meditation and that your weary soul will be satisfied, and your languishing soul will be replenished.

But it is the spirit in man, the breath of the Almighty, that makes him understand. Job 32:8 (ESV)

Do you regularly focus on your soul’s condition and needs as you do your body’s condition and needs?

Matt 6:6-8 – But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. (ESV)

Rom 8:27 – And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. (ESV)

I used to think of prayer as words, telling God what I thought I needed and how I thought God should intervene on my behalf, what he should do for me. And my focus was always on externals, my body and my circumstances. I had no idea that there was a deeper, interior part of me that needed attention. I became aware of it after the Lord God responded to my desperate cry, “There has to be something more!”

Meditation that leads to nurturing the deep, interior part of me is what I call contemplation. I invite you to try it.

Find a room or place where you can be alone, uninterrupted, and quiet for a bit.
Find a comfortable place and position to sit.
Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Consciously relax each muscle
Setting each one free from tension

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Note your thoughts, memories, emotions as they present themselves
They may be indications of deeper soul issues
Then set each one free
Confident that the Lord God will return them if there’s something you need to do with them

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Open yourself to the Word of God
Open yourself to the breath of the Almighty

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Focus intently on your breath to the exclusion of all else.
For it is the spirit in you,
The breath of the Almighty,
That makes you understand.

If you are able, lay prostrate on the floor or bed.
Or envision in your mind your body in that position
Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Become aware of the condition of your soul.

Inhale deeply. My soul thirsts.
Exhale deeply. For the living God.
Breathe in. When shall I come?
Breathe out. And appear before God?

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Become aware of your interior.
How does your soul’s thirst manifest itself? Turmoil? Making a loud, confused, droning sound? Raging? Moaning? Agitation?

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Check that your muscles are still free and relaxed
Check that your thoughts, memories, emotions are not distracting you but being gently surrendered to the Lord God.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Open yourself to the Word of God
Open yourself to the breath of the Almighty
Return to your interior.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
In whatever way your soul’s thirst manifests itself
Pour out your soul.
Spill it. Let the noisiness all drain out.
Through words of complaint to the Lord God.
Through tears. Through panting breath. Through groaning.

Breathe in. There is one
Breathe out. Whose rash words
Breathe in. Are like sword thrusts:
Breathe out. “Where is my God?”
Breathe in. “Why have you forgotten me, Lord God?”
Breathe out. “Where is my God?”
Breathe in. “Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?”
Breathe out. All is vanity, emptiness, unsatisfactory
Breathe in. All is a striving after wind
Breathe out. Distracted
Breathe in. Anxious
Breathe out. Troubled

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Are you aware of this unsatisfactory emptiness in the depths of your soul?
Have you given it your undivided attention?
Or do you brush it away, denying it?
Or do you cover it up with noise or activity or material substances?

A crash.
Falling.
Failure.
Misunderstanding.
Opposition.
Contradiction.
Rejection.
Grief.
The reasonings of your heart revealed.
A sword thrust through you.

Pour out your soul.
Until you are free.
Open to the breath of the Almighty.

There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts
But the tongue of the wise brings healing.

Lying prostrate.
Feel yourself unable to move under the firm hand of your Creator/Potter.
Note that your Creator/Potter continues to give you breath even in your oppressed state.
Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Let the breath of the Almighty nurture your soul as you lie at rest.

Choose the good portion
Sit at the Lord’s feet
Listen to his teaching
Let the breath of the Almighty nurture your soul as you lie at rest.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Lying prostrate.
Become aware of how your body feels.
Become aware of your thoughts and emotions.
Have you had life experiences that caused you to feel this way? Stuck? Helpless? Oppressed? Maybe ineffectively struggling to get yourself free?

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Open to the breath of the Almighty.
Let the breath of the Almighty nurture your soul as you lie at rest.
Remember.
Your Creator/Potter continues to give you breath even in your oppressed state, for his steadfast love endures forever.

Lying prostrate. In a passive posture.
Mirror the Lord Jesus Christ.
Identify with the Lord Jesus Christ.
Set. To lie outstretched.
In a passive position.
A sign. Miracle. Wonder.
Downfall.
Lying outstretched.

Breathe in. Embrace the falling.
Breathe out. Welcome the helplessness.
Breathe in. Hug the oppression.
Breathe out. Seize the rash words that pierce like sword-thrusts.
Breathe in. Hold rejection.
Breathe out. Lying outstretched in a passive position.

Breathe in. For it is the spirit in you,
Breathe out. The breath of the Almighty,
Breathe in. That makes you understand.
Breathe out. For the steadfast love of the Lord endures forever.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Lying prostrate.
Relinquish absolutely everything to the Lord God.

You will see him.
You will grieve on account of him
As your heart is revealed
As you discover who you really are.

One thing is necessary
One thing is needful, useful,
To furnish what is needed.
The good portion
Sit at the Lord’s feet
Listen to his teaching
The gentle movement of Spirit nurturing your soul

Welcome the honesty that follows.

Breathe in. I am anxious and troubled.
Breathe out. I am powerless.
Breathe in. I have no control.
Breathe out. I cannot give myself breath.
Breathe in. I cannot give myself life.
Breathe out. Without my heart being revealed
Breathe in. By the breath of the Almighty
Breathe out. I cannot discover who I really am.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Lying prostrate.
Surrender to your impotence.

Allow the Lord God.
To have all of you for himself.
Become aware.
Of your Creator/Potter.
Become aware.
Of your Creator/Potter’s hands.
Hands firmly cradling you.
Hands competently re-forming you.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
The tongue of the wise brings healing.
Every eye.
Your eye.
Will see.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
The tongue of the wise brings healing.
The reasonings of your heart will be revealed.
All tribes of the earth will wail in grief on account of him.
You will wail in grief on account of him.
Forcing honesty.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Lying prostrate.
Mirror your Lord Christ Jesus.
Set. To lie outstretched. A sign. Miracle. Wonder.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Anticipate your rising again.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Let go. Relinquish. Release.

Breathe in. Just as you let each breath that you receive go again
Breathe out. Let go of everything that weighs you down
Breathe in. Let go of everything that keeps you bound and stuck
Breathe out. Let go of everything in the way of the Lord God having all of you.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Focus intently on your breath to the exclusion of all else.
For it is the spirit in you
The breath of the Almighty
That makes you understand.

Rest.
Wait.
Be still.
Be without movement.
Let thoughts and emotions come and go as they will.
Open to the breath of the Almighty.
Let the breath of the Almighty nurture your soul as you lie at rest.

As you enter contemplation shut the door to your room or your place of quiet and rest. This is your soul’s time. Leave everything else outside, on the other side of the door.

Open yourself, the depths of your soul, wide to the Presence of your companions, Grace, Love, Fellowship.

It may feel like you’re entering a dark chasm.
Focus on your breath.
Open to the breath of the Almighty.
Allow yourself to descend into the darkness.
Feel your interior open

You may feel a gentle current of movement
As if from a sigh of breath
Or from the wings of a hovering bird
In and around you

Allow yourself to be drawn deeper into the Presence of the Lord God
Rest
As he searches your interior depths
As the Spirit intercedes for you
According to the will of God
With groanings too deep for words

Remain open to the Presence of your companions, Grace, Love, Fellowship.
With a sense of anticipation.

It is here in this place of open, focused attention where the breath of the Almighty will make you understand and see and grieve and then to rejoice and praise him as he reveals who you really are.

Sense your soul being drawn into the inner circle of friendship, to participate in intimate relationship with the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of Holy Spirit.

Close your eyes. Stay in this position of quiet openness and anticipation for as long as you can.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Feel yourself arise.
Get up from your prostrate position when you’re ready.

Acknowledge the gift of rising again. As you rise physically let yourself become aware of a very dim picture of resurrection, a recovery of spiritual truth as you get a taste and glimpse of who you really are and who your Creator/Potter really is.

Own and embrace the pain accompanying opposition, misunderstanding, contradiction, and rejection as a good and necessary first step in the resurrection process and in your recovery of spiritual truth. Go, live rejoicing and praising the Lord your God through the breath of the Almighty.

Philem 25 – The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. (ESV)
