Meditative – I Remember

Words – Thoughts – And Nurturing Our Souls
The sayings of my mouth
And the meditation of my heart
Are powerful
Leading either to lies or to truth, to darkness or to light, to death or to life.

When the sayings of our mouth and the meditation of our heart are grounded upon and flow from God’s living Word, they are infused with the healing and life-changing power of Love and Grace and Fellowship.

Meditation on God’s word automatically leads me into contemplation. Contemplation is simply nurturing my soul by giving it undivided attention by setting aside judgments, thoughts, and activity. Contemplation is being still. Silent. Waiting to receive Grace, Love, Fellowship. Many suggest a minimum of twenty minutes of silence, of concentrated focus on nurturing your soul in receiving the breath of the Almighty and releasing it back to him. Breathing in and out. In and out. In and out. Receiving and giving back. Breath. Life.

This meditation attempts to capture the action the psalmists took when their soul was depressed. It is taken from the Study Blog titled I Remember if you’d like to check out the Scripture texts that it’s based on.

My prayer for you is that you will encounter the breath of the Almighty as you experience and contemplate this meditation and that your weary soul will be satisfied, and your languishing soul will be replenished.

But it is the spirit in man, the breath of the Almighty, that makes him understand. (Job 32:8)

Do you regularly focus on your soul’s condition and needs as you do your body’s condition and needs?

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Focus intently on your breath to the exclusion of all else.
For it is the spirit in you,
The breath of the Almighty,
That makes you understand.

Inhale deeply. My soul thirsts.
Exhale deeply. For the living God.
Your soul is dependent upon the steady flow of the breath of the Almighty just as your physical body is dependent upon a steady flow of breath to prosper and flourish.

Breathe in. My soul.
Breathe out. My soul is cast down.
Breathe in. My soul.
Breathe out. My soul is depressed.
Breathe in. My soul.
Breathe out. My soul is in turmoil.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Pour out your soul. Spill it.
Let all the noisiness drain out
Through words of complaint to the Lord God.
Through tears. Through groaning. Through panting.
Pour out your soul
Until you feel spent.
Free.
Open
To the breath of the Almighty, the spirit in you.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Remember.

Back to the beginning.
The Lord is good
God of gods
Lord of lords
Who alone does great wonders
For his steadfast love endures forever.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Remember.
Hold the Lord God with affection and tenderness in your mind.
For his steadfast love endures forever.

The Lord is good
God of gods
Lord of lords
He forms light
And he creates darkness
He makes well-being
And he creates calamity.
The Lord is good
He is God of gods
He is Lord of lords
He does all these things.
For his steadfast love endures forever.

The Lord is good
He is God of gods
He is Lord of lords
His thoughts are not your thoughts
His ways are not your ways
His ways are higher than your ways
His thoughts are higher than your thoughts
As the heavens are higher than the earth.
For his steadfast love endures forever.

The Lord is good
He is God of gods
He is Lord of lords
Breathe in. How can I trust you, Lord God?
Breathe out. How can I believe you, Lord God?
Breathe in. How can I know you, Lord God?
Breathe out. How can I know your thoughts?
Breathe in. How can I know your ways?
Breathe out. I am so tired of trying.
Breathe in. And failing.
Breathe out. It is a hopeless task.
Breathe in. It is an impossible load.
Breathe out. I cannot bear it.
The Lord is good
He is God of gods
He is Lord of lords

The Lord Jesus said:
Breathe in. All things
Breathe out. Even you
Breathe in. Have been handed over to me
Breathe out. By my Father
Breathe in. No one knows me
Breathe out. Except my Father
Breathe in. No one knows my Father
Breathe out. Except me
Breathe in. And
Breathe out. Anyone
Breathe in. I choose
Breathe out. To reveal him.

The Lord Jesus invites:
Breathe in. Come to me
Breathe out. All who feel fatigue
Breathe in. Because of hard work.
Breathe out. Come to me
Breathe in. All who are overburdened
Breathe out. With ceremony and spiritual anxiety.
Breathe in. Stop!
Breathe out. Quit your worthless work.
Breathe in. Desist your striving.
Breathe out. Come to an end of yourself.

The Lord Jesus is calling you:
Breathe in. Come to me
Breathe out. Lie at rest
Breathe in. Be refreshed
Breathe out. Be joined to me
Breathe in. Take my yoke upon you
Breathe out. My yoke is useful
Breathe in. In manners and morals.
Breathe in. I furnish what you need.
Breathe out. My burden
Breathe in. My task
Breathe out. Is light.
Breathe in. If you are led by the Spirit
Breathe out. You are not under law.
Breathe in. It is the Spirit who gives life.
Breathe out. The flesh is of no avail.
Breathe in. Your thoughts are not useful.
Breathe out. Your ways have no benefit.
Breathe in. Come to an end of yourself.
Breathe out. For I will satisfy your weary soul
Breathe in. Every languishing soul, yours included,
Breathe out. I will replenish.
Breathe in. Come to me
Breathe out. Lie at rest

Breathe in. The words
Breathe out. That I have spoken
Breathe in. To you
Breathe out. Are spirit.
Breathe in. The words
Breathe out. That I have spoken
Breathe in. To you
Breathe out. Are life.
Breathe in. Come to me
Breathe out. Lie at rest
Breathe in. The word of God
Breathe out. Is living.
Breathe in. The word of God
Breathe out. Is active.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Remember.
The Lord is good
For his steadfast love endures forever

Be still.
Be without movement.
Let thoughts and emotions come and go as they will.
Give focused attention only to your breath, the breath of the Almighty in you.
Let the breath of the Almighty nurture your soul.

Remember the Lord God.
Keep him, hold him with tenderness and affection in your mind and heart.
Be silent with a sense of anticipation.
It is here in this place of stillness and anticipation where the breath of the Almighty will make you understand, will satisfy your weary soul and replenish your languishing soul.

Stay in this position of quiet anticipation for as long as you can.

Sense your soul being drawn into the inner circle of friendship, to participate in intimate relationship with the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of Holy Spirit

Close your eyes.

When ready, open your eyes.
Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Remember.
Hold the Lord God with affection and tenderness in your heart the whole day long, through the breath of the Almighty in you.

Phil 4:23 – The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. (ESV)

  1. 11/10/18 Thanks Sharon for your picture of golden joinery pottery and for making me read more carefully what you quoted from Paul: Rom 9:21-25 (the potter and the vessels of wrath and mercy). If I am reading correctly the potter “makes out of the same lump” vessels of honorable and dishonorable use. So if each of us is one lump we are the stuff of both types of vessels. God is enduring much with our dishonorable vessel “in order to make known” the glory of the riches destined for our honorable vessel.

  2. Exactly!
